Hi all,
I would like to know if there are any nurses who make at or over 100k per year just working as an RN - not CRNA, Advanced Practice etc., just bedside nursing... and how do you do it, overtime, premium pay etc. or any other combination that works for you and where are you located? I know east and west coasters tend to make more. I'm asking because I want to increase my income so that I can knock out some student loans before going back to school and piling more on. Thanks for any and all replies.

Yeah, right. More like less than $30000 full-time in a hospital. Which is why I quit.

San Francisco area, with a 48 hour work week. Easily possible to get over that, but then cost of living is also much higher as well. So, your final take home after taxes may not be that high. Taxes are also higher.

Not much to add...Perhaps if you worked weekend differential at nighttime somewhere....but even then, I don't know if the resulting salary would be over $100,000.

Not me.
I do work with nurses who make much more than that.
One works six twelve hour nights a week! Her base is probably about $45.00.
Time and a half after eight hours the first four shifts and the entire 12 of the 5th and 6th.
When she goes on vacation she only gets paid for 36 hours. Before taxes she makes about $3,500.00 a week with benefits.
Amazingly she is sharp, energetic, and pleasant most of the time.
If I worked that much I would be so grouchy I wouldn't even want to work with myself.

I was on par to make $150,000 as a traveling nurse but that was working a lot of hours. That was a net of $150,000 not a gross. CRNA school came a calling and I answered so I can make that kind of money all the time and work 1/3 as much.

I work with 2 nurses that make over 100,000 a year. They both have a full time job and work in a pool. 60 hours a week is not unusual for them.
However, they both have more than 10 years experience, so thier base pay is higher than a new grad.
They are both great nurses. I just couldn't do it.

I have come close as a traveler on occasion, but that is still with putting in a lot of hours, finding your own housing that is very frugal, and pocketing the rest. I can only do it short term for a specific goal though, and I am no spring chicken anymore.
My company pays double overtime, and the hospital I was in didn't mind paying it. I rented a little $400 apt. with no amenities, but I was there to work, not play. My housing allowance was $1400, so I pocketed $1000 tax free money per month. Then my salary was $30/hr. I usually worked 60 hours (five 12 hour shifts) per week, so 20 of that was at $60/hr. It can add up fairly quickly.
It is not a lifestyle I want forever, but it helped me when I needed it the most.

I know some that make close to that working the pool. Both do third shift though.

I knew a guy that works 6 12-hour nights shifts a week doing two different contracts through an agency for two different hospitals and he made over 100,000 grand here in Florida. He was an ADN grad who worked ICU.
With overtime it is possible to make good money in nursing. Personally, I'm not killing myself. 3 12-hour shifts pays my biills, 10% into retirement funds and two vacations a year. :)
