Any bedside nurses making over 100K ?

Nurses General Nursing

Hi all,

I would like to know if there are any nurses who make at or over 100k per year just working as an RN - not CRNA, Advanced Practice etc., just bedside nursing... and how do you do it, overtime, premium pay etc. or any other combination that works for you and where are you located? I know east and west coasters tend to make more. I'm asking because I want to increase my income so that I can knock out some student loans before going back to school and piling more on. Thanks for any and all replies.

I greatly admire those of you that can work like that!!:) I just can't do it.

I worked 12 hour shifts for a few years in ICU, and after the 3rd in a row, I was just plain MEAN when I got home. I will no longer work more than two in a row, but I only work part-time now. I don't have to work as hard as I did years ago - and now my nursing job is just for MYSELF.

I have an ex who walked out of nursing school (BSN) and into a job in San Francisco getting $80,000 a year. He had NO previous experience! He works 3 12's one week and 4 12's the next week.

He also rents a cheap $500 a month apartment. He's rollin in it.

I wonder though, pay discrepencies exist just about everywhere else. Do you all think male nurses get paid more for the same job? What were some starting salaries for female nurses (ER) in San Fran?

Yes, males do make more than females in the nursing field

I work in San Francisco, and I can say most of the nurses I know make over $100k a year. At my pay rate and working 40 hours a week, I would make over $96,000. However, I work four, 8-hr shifts, so my annual pay is around $77,000. I'm also a fairly new nurse (1 year of experience), so the rate I quoted is pretty much what a new grad would start at.

Rent is higher here. I pay $1,500/month for a 1-bedroom apartment. Taxes and food are also higher. With that said, you can still make a decent income and be able to save money without being in the poor house. The only thing about SF is you can't afford to buy a home (renting is ok). The average home price is around $650,000. At that price you will get a 650 sq. ft., 1-bedroom condo a.k.a. crackerjack box! LOL

I wish I had access to the raw data. They reported higher salaries. Most nurses I know are paid hourly. Did they normalize for hours worked, shift differential, and area of practice? How many nurses did the survey compare? I can just see so many variables that could skew the data. (Men in ER or ICU compared with Women in LTC facilities as an example.)

I make 90k with working around 40-44 hr/wk including my double (at my facility you make 1.5 pay for doubles) with under 10 years experience. I work primarily days but I do pick up nights. I live in CT and some of the senior experienced RN's that are capped (I'm talking 30 years experience)with all certifications and levels are making 115-130k. Hats off to them because they deserve every penny and MORE!

The more certifications/differentials/ and levels that you have add up as well as what shift you work...those evening and night differentials add up!

I make about 150,000 every night in my dreams. :)

Yah, me too ....keep dreaming.

btw I like your dog.

I am not capable of working the kind of hours it would take to get up to 100K. I get very depressed when I don't have ample downtime. That is why the home health job I am working is something I can handle. I only come into the office a couple of days a week and most of my time is spent filling out forms, which I'm good at. Maybe that is nothing to brag about but I am better at and prefer paperwork to meeting with people, in most cases. It just suits my personality better. And the pay is not that bad (around 62K before taxes). Doesn't send me to the Riviera every year but it is enough to make it on.

I hope my home health job lasts.

I am a newish nurse 2yrs base pay is not great but with shift diff. and weekend option pay plus a premium pay for scheduled o/t shift I will make about 90,000 this year, with that I still will get 3wks vacation time. I live in NC so cost of living is not bad, I am doing it just to pay off my bills before going back to school.

Good luck.

I was on par to make $150,000 as a traveling nurse but that was working a lot of hours. That was a net of $150,000 not a gross. CRNA school came a calling and I answered so I can make that kind of money all the time and work 1/3 as much.

You're in Turkmenistan and offered that kind of salary?

SF is notorious for paying RNs extremely high salaries. I would love to work there because it's such a beautiful city. When I was in nursing school I actually sent off for information at one of the hospitals there, but then the earthquake occurred and I never heard from them.

But for $1500 a month, I'll take my 3-bedroom, two-bath, two-car garage house that I will own in 11 more years instead of 1-bedroom apt. with no hope of equity.
