We were discussing the Disneryland measles outbreak at work, and I was appalled to find some of my co-workers refuse to vaccinate their kids. They (grudgingly) receive the vaccines they need to remain employed, but doubt their safety/necessity for their kids.
I must say, I am absolutley stunned. How can one be a nurse and deny science?
As a nurse, you should darn well know what the scientific method entails and what phrases such as "evidence based" and "peer reviewed" mean.
I have to say, I have lost most of my respect for the nurses and mistrust their judgement; after all, if they deny science, on what premise are they basing their practices?
Gooselady, no they aren't stupid or bad criminals. But the dissenters here, in this thread, are supposed to be educated people, and when presented with scientific facts, should have enough maturity to throw in the towel. The stubborn clinging you speak about, and that I have seen displayed here by nurses is scary. The teachers I work with? Many are antivaxx. I try to educate if it comes up (ever try to "educate" a teacher? Good luck) but the fervor about this is, yea, exactly what you describe.
Good point about the "fanaticism" aspect of many of the ant-vaxxers stances.
It seems that some of them become so invested in defending this that even when information is presented which absolutely disproves even a small point (take the formaldehyde nonsense for example), they cannot even admit this one small error.
I've noticed even before this that it seems there is an "epidemic" of people being unwilling to ever admit they are wrong about anything. We see it a lot with celebrities. No matter how egregious the behavior, rather than admitting they were wrong, they defend and deny and deflect ("haters gonna hate"), as though saying "I was wrong" will cause the earth to quit spinning. Not a good develpment, imo.
Andi neither one of those are anymore than opinion pieces. Trying to debate that their is a conspiracy theory based on small profit margin off vaccines has been debunked several times over.
1. Pharmaceutical companies do not control the world's peer-reviewed scientific literature nor do pharmaceutical companies have any part of the vast majority of post-marketing studies on vaccines or the VAERS system.
2. All large corporations contribute to both political parties. That doesn't mean or even suggest that somehow there could be a world wide conspiracy theory that there is some vast unknown adverse effect caused by vaccines that millions of people would have had to be in on.
Why not debate the scientific literature instead of relying on conspiracy theories and opinion pieces? Anyone can come up with opinion piece on any almost any subject, but as HCW we should be debating facts not fiction.

Watch it first. They are not just opinion. In the podcast, he brings up studies....same with the documentary.

I will look at the studies, if you want to provide the names so I can find them. I have no interest in watching an opinion piece that IMHO probably doesn't reference articles correctly or draws inconsistent conclusions.
Oh, Andi. Just. Stop. You're not going to change people's minds here.
Well they say they are open minded. Why doesn't someone listen to the podcast and watch the movie. Then, come back here and tell me how they are both wrong and unscientific. I looked up the felony charges that were brought against Pfizer. That's not opinion, that's a fact.
