Anti-vax nurses? Are you serious?

Published

We were discussing the Disneryland measles outbreak at work, and I was appalled to find some of my co-workers refuse to vaccinate their kids. They (grudgingly) receive the vaccines they need to remain employed, but doubt their safety/necessity for their kids.

I must say, I am absolutley stunned. How can one be a nurse and deny science?

As a nurse, you should darn well know what the scientific method entails and what phrases such as "evidence based" and "peer reviewed" mean.

I have to say, I have lost most of my respect for the nurses and mistrust their judgement; after all, if they deny science, on what premise are they basing their practices?

Well they say they are open minded.

Did anyone actually say that? I don't recall reading that. Nevertheless, I do look forward to hearing what people think about the referenced studies.

Well they say they are open minded. Why doesn't someone listen to the podcast and watch the movie. Then, come back here and tell me how they are both wrong and unscientific. I looked up the felony charges that were brought against Pfizer. That's not opinion, that's a fact.

This is what I found. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/03/business/03health.html?_r=0 Is there something about vaccines that I missed.

Over marketing and profiteering does not = Worldwide conspiracy on vaccines.

No one is going to deny that all large corporations, including pharmaceutical companies, are interested in profit margins, but trying to equate that to every peer-reviewed scientific article being wrong about vaccines that have been around for decades has no basis in logic.

Watch the bought movie before March 6th, then let's discuss.

I am absolutely open-minded to any peer-reviewed clinical studies that differ from the dozen of extant studies on vaccine efficacy and safety. I am not "open-minded" to being swayed by hot air, conspiracy theory, bloggers, celebrity babies, hopes and dreams, grasping for straws, etc.

The vast majority of staunch anti-vaxers (that I have encountered) are emotional sensationalists that also believe in conspiracy theory, are against "GMO", are against pharmaceutical therapy, and have a very poor understanding of actual science. The irony is that they have these sensationalist beliefs stoked by blogs of other sensationalists that reference pseudoscience because they also don't understand what science is. It's why when we ask them to post data they link to blogs and YouTube videos.

I am still trying to figure out how Bextra's "off label" campaign relates to vaccines.

Watch the the bought movie. It's not youtube. It's a documentary. It has good points. It's eye opening. It will help you and others understand.

Boston, I actually think you would appreciate the documentary as there are scientists in it discussing the issues and they refer to studies or lack of.

Per usual, andi78 presents us with the same cast of characters, NONE of whom are experts in vaccines, immunology, or epidemiology, propagating the same tripe as in her other links.

I guess it's your choice to turn a blind eye. The documentary is informative and has plenty of experts and scientists, even a former CDC scientist. You can't really judge it by the opinions of others. Watch it for yourself and then decide.....or don't.

The link you posted has plenty of misinformation about the film. It's also what you all would call an opinion piece. How about give it a chance. Watch it and form your own opinion. Come back and tell us what you think. Is it a terrible documentary? Does it project false claims? You won't know if you don't see it.
