I swear, since I have been in school, I've gained an undisclosed amount of weight and it's soooo depressing! So of course I started back up at the gym in January ready for action. I started back to school towards the 2nd week of January but I still managed to hang in there. However, once the clinicals and the papers, and the paperwork and the studying (BTW I'm in an accelerated program) kicked in, I find myself glued to the table or the computer. Its never ending! I constantly feel like I'm under a pile of work and I feel guilty for any moment I take to do anything non school related.
On top of that I have a husband and kids who need me and a house thats a disaster... how do you all manage? I am up at like 4am to get my kids ready for school and at clinicals by 6am. I'm not out of school until 6 or 7pm and I have to come home and get busy with dinner, help kids with homework, get them ready for bed, get everything together for the next day (although hubby helps) and homework oh not to mention studying for every other week exams and in between that theres sleep.
Where does the workout happen? I've just resorted to small changes like not snacking on junk all day, and instead, taking baby carrots, grapes, sugar free jello or yogurt, nuts etc as snacking and taking lean cuisines
Thanks

Gain weight in nursing school...no! Despite battling my weight for years, I have made sure I've not gained weight in nursing school.
I have three reasons:
- Gaining weight would make me more likely to end up as a patient
- I cannot afford new clothing
- I want to be physically strong and enjoy my body while I can
For years, I would go to the gym every day or every other day. I don't have time for that with my class load now. So I have found alternatives that work just as well (or better!) and are less expensive than a gym membership.
I use workout DVDs at home. I do the ones from Jillian Michaels, The Firm, etc, plus yoga and pilates DVDs. Jillian Michaels has one DVD that will whip you into shape (and pain, temporarily) in just 25 minutes. It's her Shred DVD workout. I think for the home workout DVDs to really be effective to replace a gym, they've got to be kick-butt hard. I've also got resistance cords, hand weights, and a stepper at home. If I'm watching TV, I'm on the stepper most of the time.
I really believe it comes down to what we prioritize. Weight gain in nursing school is not inevitable. Can we honestly say we don't waste 25 minutes somewhere in the day that could have been spent working out in front of the TV with a workout DVD?
After a while, eating healthy becomes pleasurable, too. I think it's about habit.
Another benefit of exercise is it helps with stress management and mood. I've noticed I am coping with stress better than many of my classmates. It didn't used to be that way (if you only saw me in the first semester of nursing school, ugh, I was a wreck!).
I gained 40lbs over the 4 years I took my BScN... thankfully, I've lost 25lbs since I finished in the first week ok Dec, but still lots of work ahead of me:( Apparently spending hours in front of a computer with nothing but chips and textbooks around you is not conducive to a "hot bod" lol
Hey guys I'd Like to share my story! Im 5'7 and in college i was carrying 20 pound extra...lost the weight while waiting to get into nursing school....Got into nursing school gained it allllll back! I graduated on June of 08...lost the weight....and NOW (d/t personal problems of mine) am finally sitting the nclex next month and after 21/2 months of studying pretty much gained almost all of it back.... needless to say Nursing or better say studying makes me fat!!! Hopefully i'll be able to pass the nclex 1st time around otherwise i'll probably gain another 20 pound! Sad thing is the day after my boards i'm flying out to Hawaii with my hubby and in reality me being almost 155pds...Theres no way in h** im wearing a Two-piece!!
I already gained a lot of weight over the past 2.5 years from medical issues over the last 6 months I have finally been in a position I can start loosing weight again and have lost 30 lbs. I want to loose about 50 more to get me back to where I was before kids. I am hoping to achieve most of this before I start nursing school in August because I know I will have a lot less time when that starts.
I gained a significant amount of weight since I started nursing school in fall '07. I don't have time to go to the gym because I work 24 hours a week along with being in school 4-5 days a week. I try to watch what I eat, but sometimes I have to grab something quick (chips, candy bar, hot dog, pizza, etc.)- things you can eat while studying.

Exactly.....no time for grocery shopping so you eat out and get fat!!!!! I'm small to begin with and have no time for grocery shopping or cooking so I've been eating out and have gained about 10 lbs
I'm in my 2nd semester and got my gym membership back.... It's hard...people either lose weight due to stress or eat due to stress.....I wish I was the first one!!!!
