Anbody Else Gain a Ton of Weight in Nursing School?

Published

I swear, since I have been in school, I've gained an undisclosed amount of weight and it's soooo depressing! So of course I started back up at the gym in January ready for action. I started back to school towards the 2nd week of January but I still managed to hang in there. However, once the clinicals and the papers, and the paperwork and the studying (BTW I'm in an accelerated program) kicked in, I find myself glued to the table or the computer. Its never ending! I constantly feel like I'm under a pile of work and I feel guilty for any moment I take to do anything non school related.

On top of that I have a husband and kids who need me and a house thats a disaster... how do you all manage? I am up at like 4am to get my kids ready for school and at clinicals by 6am. I'm not out of school until 6 or 7pm and I have to come home and get busy with dinner, help kids with homework, get them ready for bed, get everything together for the next day (although hubby helps) and homework oh not to mention studying for every other week exams and in between that theres sleep.

Where does the workout happen? I've just resorted to small changes like not snacking on junk all day, and instead, taking baby carrots, grapes, sugar free jello or yogurt, nuts etc as snacking and taking lean cuisines

Thanks

Ugh! I did not gain any during my first two semesters of school. However, I had Pedi last semester, and I gained 15 pounds in that one semester. I had to buy new scrub pants for this semester because I can't fit into my others. I know I was just eating because of the stress, and I was soooo sedentary. I felt like all I did was sit around and study. It was pathetic. I have tried to make some changes this semester, but I still haven't lost any. I need to make time to get off my bum and at least take a walk. Geez! I will be so glad to be finished in May.

i gained 40 pounds my first two semesters of nursing school. i dont know if it was the stress or the box of cereal i took to bed each night while studying care plans or for a test, but the next semester i took an exercise class and lost about 20 pounds but still retained other 20 pounds until after graduation. i got a job in the real world and lost a few more pounds. dont get discouraged. it is more important that you study and make the grade than how much you weigh or how you look when you go to class. you are doing this program to improve your life, you are not there to impress your classmates. just remember that when you graduate and pass nclex you can afford the gym membership or weight watchers or whatever you want to do or it may be that walking the halls in the hospital will help. best of luck to you

Ive gained at least 30 of those pounds. Im already overweight and I cant see my feet. I do however plan on going on a diet as soon as I graduate. Food soothes me right now. IM SO STRESSED!

i used to weigh 170 before i started the nursing program when i worked out. now i weigh 212. =( I need to go to the gym, but won't due to the incredible amount of homework and studying i have to do.

I'm not in nursing school yet but I am working full time and taking my pre-req's. When I started taking classes I didn't have time to work out anymore and I ended up gaining about 15 lbs. I since have lost 10 lbs by counting my daily calories. I figured out the amount I would need to consume a day in order to lose one pound a week. I started keeping track of everything I ate, never ate more than the daily calories allowed, and the pounds started coming off without exercise.

I gained 15 lbs my first semester, and I had to buy a new clinical uniform :( When weight gain starts hitting me in the wallet, it hurts a lot more!

I just started my second semester (MedSurg) and I'm doing great so far. My program is not accelerated, but I'm still really busy. I work full time during the day, 40 hours a week, and I have 18 hours of clinical every other weekend. Classes are 5-6 hours a few days a week in the evening. On nights I don't have class, I go to the gym for an hour (NO EXCUSES!!). I bring my study cards and learn about drug names and disease mechanisms. On nights I have class, I try to squeeze in a 20-30 minute workout between work and class.

I'm also following Weight Watchers, and I fill my fridge with fresh fruits and veggies, salad stuff and Lean Cuisines in the freezer. I keep a few cans of low-cal soup too, for days when I don't have time to cook. I am lucky enough to have clean healthy tap water (free!) and a fiance who isn't picky :) I have dropped about 5 lbs so far, but the exercise is really improving my mood and my entire attitude about school. Last semester I was stressed out and on edge ALL the time, and I'm much more relaxed overall now.

If you can squeeze in even 20 minutes a day, I'd recommend it. I have Jillian Michael's 30 day shred and it's a great 25 minute workout that incorporates weights and cardio (you only need a set of dumbbells and a mat if you don't have carpet). Good Luck!

I think Ive lost another 5 lbs on top of last semesters 5+ lbs. I cant even say that I dont eat or am eating extra healthy... I feel like the stress of it all just burns it away. I'll have breakfast at 9am and be starving by 11. And that usually never happens... Oy vey!:icon_roll

Yes! Also: before, during, & after. Gosh, maybe it's not just school? :p

I stopped weighing myself a few months ago since it was too depressing. I know I've gained about 10-15 since school started.

I try to watch what I eat and so far it must have been helping me hold steady--I still have pants that I fit in :)

I, too, am married with two small children..Im also in an accelerated program...I work weekends, 12 hour shifts, and go to school from monday-thursday evenings...Always keep your priorities straight!!! Your kids and your health!! I did start gaining weight at the beginning of school but i decided not to let this overcome me, you overcome your mind, body, and soul!! I always take a goody bag with me to school, carrots, nuts, etc, and bottled water!! Keep focused on the learning experience not the crazy cravings like I use to get!! What I did to organize my life a lil more. I bought a planner which has hour to hour scheduling, each activitie, each reminder, each anything, I wrote down and made sure I accomplished it, including my family time, my hubby time, and my study time, so focus yourself and you will have much success!! Wishing you all the best:yeah:

i can say my weight was pretty much the same with the stress compensated by foods..hehe..
