I swear, since I have been in school, I've gained an undisclosed amount of weight and it's soooo depressing! So of course I started back up at the gym in January ready for action. I started back to school towards the 2nd week of January but I still managed to hang in there. However, once the clinicals and the papers, and the paperwork and the studying (BTW I'm in an accelerated program) kicked in, I find myself glued to the table or the computer. Its never ending! I constantly feel like I'm under a pile of work and I feel guilty for any moment I take to do anything non school related.
On top of that I have a husband and kids who need me and a house thats a disaster... how do you all manage? I am up at like 4am to get my kids ready for school and at clinicals by 6am. I'm not out of school until 6 or 7pm and I have to come home and get busy with dinner, help kids with homework, get them ready for bed, get everything together for the next day (although hubby helps) and homework oh not to mention studying for every other week exams and in between that theres sleep.
Where does the workout happen? I've just resorted to small changes like not snacking on junk all day, and instead, taking baby carrots, grapes, sugar free jello or yogurt, nuts etc as snacking and taking lean cuisines
Thanks
Busy here too! Two small kids and only doing pre-reqs right now, I can only imagine how much harder it will be once I'm in nursing school. I just had my baby back in Nov, so I'm still trying to loose the 10lbs I gained from that. Before I was pregnant I was really starting to focus on exercising and eating healthier, but I was still about another 15lbs overweight. I'm short too (5'0") so these extra pounds may not sound like a lot, but they really add up on me
Right now I'm just trying to eat healthier. I'm not counting calories though, just trying to make life long changes in my eating habits. I've switched to whole, multi grain bread, whole grain pastas, eating at least 1 fruit/1 vegetable a day (but I need to work on variety), organic eggs, no more than 1 can of soda a week, skim milk. ect. ect. My scale broke a month ago so I don't know if I have lost any weight yet, but I do feel better now that Taco Bell isn't my lunch buddy. I'll focus more on calorie restriction once I get to a point where eating healthy becomes normal to me and I no longer crave fast food or junk. That's where I was at before I became pregnant and it was SO nice!
I was 130lb when I started and 170 at graduation. I am 6 feet tall, so I was underweight to begin with. I graduated in December and a few weeks after school ended my face cleared up and I lost 10 pounds without even trying. I use to work out like a freak before school but now I am going to do it in a healthy way. I am going to get a trainer and start hiking again. :) I know it was the stress and the weird study hours etc...I did the best I could to make sure I passed and it was well worth the extra weight....for now...
As much as I detest chewing gum, I find that if I gnaw on a piece, I won't fill my face with food. I'm totally a stress eater, but gum seems to fill the gap. But I won't chew it in public. I may make an exeption for the library, though.
ITA about having nutritious snax, if you are going to eat. Something filling and fiberlicious, like carrots or celery, but only if you can eat them without dip or peanut butter!
I just figured out that the reason I'm not losing any baby weight, aside from breastfeeding, is probably all the honey I put in my tea, which I drink ALL DAY LONG. Duh. So it's splenda with a tiny touch of honey from now on. It's the little things. I really encourage everyone to read Mindless Eating by Brian Wansink. He really helped me with my mindless eating, and while I haven't lost any weight, I haven't gained more, either. Plus? It's really quite funny. He got people to eat a QUART of soup without their realizing it. Nuts!
And, finally, don't forget that anything you eat with high fructose corn syrup will not trigger your satiety system, so your body will continue to tell you you're hungry. Bummer, since I'd just about kill for a Coke pretty much all freaking day.
I've lost weight. I really consider what I choose to eat, usually high protein, low carb, low sodium choices. Lots of salads with a simply cooked lean meat (fast & easy).
HOWEVER, I think the most important factor has been changing my sleeping habits. I try very hard to get to bed early enough to get 8 hours sleep (no, not easy!) When I get enough sleep I'm not constantly eating to get more energy.
I hope this helps someone. Good luck!
Can I say that I just started nursing school and I want to pull my hair out because after graduating with my degrees i never study sooo much in my life! Yes I gained about 10 lbs since started and now I am back on the route of watching what I eat. It might take a little time to pack your lunch, but it's well worth it because then you won't feel so bad about your body. When I eat at my school cafeteria I tend to make smarter choices by eating salad and turkey sandwiches or chicken wraps! It sound so bland, but keeping it simple and small portions helps a great deal.

I know how you feel. When I'm not doing my school work, I'm helping my daughters. My husband works a lot of hours, so I'm responsible for all most all house work and the kids. I feel it's just stress. I always loose weight during spring and summer breaks. I know several people who graduate the nursing program who gained weight while in the program. I feel if your loosing weight or gaining your working hard and paying attention to school and not other things. Just remember you do need a break here or there so you don't burn out. I try to walk my dogs every day just to unwind.
