amazing natural remedies

Published

I recently had to do a dressing change that was made of honey, I thought that was so cool, I realize that nature gives us so much.:redpinkhe:redpinkhe:redpinkhe

I listen to "The People's Pharmacy" on Saturday mornings. They have loads of information regarding natural remedies. Some sound like they might work pretty well. One we did try was using soy sauce on minor burns (like common kitchen burns, not burns that actually break the skin). Anyway, immediately after the burn, apply soy sauce and the blistering and redness will stop. We tried it one day after my husband was burned and it worked! No blistering, pain was reduced. I have heard, I don't know if it is true, that army medics used to carry soy sauce for this same reason. Maybe some one can confirm?

Oh, and there are lots of sulfate free shampoos and hair care products on the market now. Loreal has a whole line.

Fresh ginger root on a burn will stop the pain every time.

Sinus congestion....hot water with fresh rosemary and peppermint, bend over it with a towel and breath in the steam... be careful not to burn yourself, the essential oils released will be good for your skin too.

I have also found ginger and cola surp work grate for nausea and they do not make you sleepy.

Anyone remember gentian violet? My daughter got an infection on her scalp when she was little, all the stuff the Dr. prescribed, pills, creams, did nothing for it. Someone told me to put gentian violet on it, and it turned her hair purple, but it absolutely healed the infection.

And Lucky, I'm sure you do know that getting lice doesn't equal trashy...my little guy has picked them up twice this year from I-don't-know-where.

Oh these people were trashy, they had trash everywhere in their house, went almost 3 months with no running water and had social services visiting after several calls from neighbors. They had money for beer and cigarettes but not diapers or food. Thankfully they moved.

Gentian Violet is great stuff. When I was nursing my son, we both kept getting thrush since he was on antibiotics constantly. Gentian violet would clear it up in no time compared to Nystatin.

Just curious--was it used to treat thrush in the mouth? On the nipple? How'd you use it?

My daughter's was a fungal infection of some sort, on her scalp. She was handling a litter of kittens of a feral cat that lived under our house, I think that's how she got it.

I am going to Google gentian violet, now I'm even more curous about it.

Speaking of lice:

My son has come home with them, again. The OTC treatments have not worked this time or the last time he got them. The bugs are developing a resistance to them.

A good home remedy for these buggers is mayonnaise, and olive oil. I have also used neem oil, which stinks to high heaven.

Tooth pain: pressure points in the web of muscle btwn the thumb and first finger. Use thumb and first finger of other hand to apply pressure from both sides. It has really worked for me.

I'm currently backed up all the way to my small intestines (or it feels like it), and my husband swears by an organic apple juice fast. He bought me a gallon yesterday, and he warned me to do it on a day when I don't have to go anywhere because I'll be trotting to the bathroom quite often.

TMI, I know, but y'all are nurses and can surely handle it. I'll let you know how it goes (literally).

I used it for both the mouth and nipple. It was messy, and my baby definitely gave me some funny looks the first few times he went to nurse and my nipples were bright purple. Here is a site with directions:

I also used topical Gentian Violet when my son had ringworm. You can get it from the pharmacy at Walmart, you just have to ask for it.

Dandruff? Try an aspirin shampoo!

According to MayoClinic.com, possible causes for dandruff include sensitivity to hair care products, shampooing too frequently or infrequently, eczema, and psoriasis. The most common dandruff treatment is medicated shampoo. However, those who prefer natural home remedies may find that adding crushed aspirin to your shampoo can do the trick. Aspirin contains salicylates, the same active ingredient in medicated shampoos containing salicylic acid.

Take as much shampoo as you use each time you shampoo, (capful?) add two crushed aspirin tablets, leave on hair for a couple minutes, then rinse out completely. Works great!

Thanks! I will have my son try that.

gentian violet, a true lifesaver.

my mil told me about it when my premie son kept on getting thrush, over and over again.

the nystatin was useless (to me).

got gentian violet at osco's, applied it and thrush was gone next day!

be careful, it stains a deep purple, but it was so worth it.

Also, sugarless candy works wonders- basically it's a tasty version of lactulose. If you eat a double serving (or at least 30gms of sugar alcohols - listed on the nutrition info), you should be squeaky clean by dinner !! I always take sugarless candy to the hospital, since it doesn't require an order, and is easier to get down than that nasty mag citrate :):twocents:

Leaches for hematomas!
