Is it my imagination, or has allnurses become predominantly a forum for students? I dunno, it seems like I have to wade thru tons of threads about nursing schools or nursing instructors, or new grads, in order to find a thread about nurses who already working. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE and feel for students, it's just that the site is being overwhelmed with them. Maybe it''s because they are sooooo stressed out now so they need to vent more?
I realize I'll get flamed for this, but I have noticed this trend.
No need to be such a negative nancy. you were in the students shoes once. students are verrry limited on time. they post wherever they can asap.
There was nothing negative in that post; the OP even went to the extra lengths of soothing those who are quick to LOOK for negativity by saying it was merely an observation. And she wanted to know how to get to discussion boards of more interest to her.
FYI: Working nurses are also "verrry limited on time". If you find yourself so short on time you post "wherever you can asap" then it seems like you have a poor working knowledge of these forums. Go to the student boards and post there, or a specific discussion forum for a specific question. Posting 'wherever you can' is foolish, as it wastes your exceptionally precious time by having your post viewed by people who don't particularly have an interest in assisting you.
My only question is, why not PM or e-mail the staff this question? why post it where the potential for misreading it exists in the place the most people who can't answer the question will respond? Which obviously includes me. The OP obviously knew it was going to touch some nerves as evidenced by their zealous denial of attacking anyone. And now I must ensure the OP I am in no way attacking them. Just my observation.

Quite honestly, I'm way busier now than I ever was as a student. I'm working full time, plus OT, in grad school full time, and now live on my own versus in a dorm where basically all my needs were met with little effort on my own part. Mayhaps a bit more time management is necessary.
Oh Tweety.. now I'm gonna be up all night. I have been here for couple years now and just discovered the allnurses central because of your post. I went and checked it out.. now I've got a lot more to read!! Thanks (and I really do mean thanks )
w00t!!!
Love that forum! I can't help but jump into the political forums and giving my
I have no problem with student posters. I wish I had discovered this board when I was a student. That said, I wish the student section had a "homework help" section.
They do. It's right here: https://allnurses.com/nursing-student-assistance/
maybe it's just the posts that i have been clicking on, but i didn't realize that this was a big issue. i'm a working lpn and an rn student. and i can honestly say that i've found very useful information here, for both of those hats.
i'm by no means taking sides, and i do get that the op isn't attacking students. but i've actually noticed that a lot of questions are asked by nurses. i've seen all kinds of topics, such as how others would handle a certain situation at work, problems with co-workers or family members, how to give certain medications, relocation, job changes, shift changes...even topics about being overweight, lack of sleep, or single parenting.
true, i have seen posts pop up where it's obvious that a student just wants quick answers to their homework. but they are usually shot down with a quickness by others or simply ignored. to me, if a forum has 100 topics on hospice for instance, and 10 of them are random questions from students, there is still enough pertinent information there, for working nurses to get what they seek. and if there isn't, that nurse could do a search for the topic, just like it is suggested that the students do. or they could also create the topics themselves if answers can't be found.
i imagine that no matter what forum or site one would go to, there are going to be some annoying issues. some people just don't pay attention to where they are posting, or what they are posting, for that matter. but i've never felt the board was overrun by students or nurses. i've always felt there was a nice balance.
i guess my question would be, what exactly is it that is so difficult about having to sort through posts? again, no disrespect, as i can see everyone's point. but i am just wondering exactly what the problem is, and what suggestions there are to resolve it.

it is annoying because sometimes it goes to extremes. and for those of us with slower systems it can be a pain.
it is when you click on the bb to see the last 24 hours, and 4 of the posts on one page, all deal with students asking the very same question. it is also disrespectful to those that really do want to help you, because it is wasting their time.
at the first of every term, we get the infamous adn vs bsn questions, how unfair it is to not be permitted calculators/how bad that they are at math, that the required grades are too hard/unfair, why can't i record classes, text in class, cannot live without cell phone in class.
not to mention the end of school, "my g-d, i took the nclex 24 hours ago and my result is not posted - i will just die", "i got 100 questions, do you think i passed - has anyone passed with 100 questions ?" business. guess what i do remember being a student and we had to deal with the two day trial by fire, in which you had to wait 3-12 weeks! to get results via snail mail.
and then the infamous, "i have a question - and i need an answer nowwww!!!!!, or the, "please read this/answer this/help me". you are sympathetic and want to help, so you click on to find that is truly nothing immediate, nothing that you can nor should answer and often that the poster could easily answer by reading the bb for 15-30 minutes.
i used to try and answer these but found that invariably the posters didn't really want help, or were unwilling to take advice.
it has gotten to the point that if any thread with an ambigious is posted, unless it is posted by someone that i know, i don't click. because they are in such a hurry yet think that it is okay to waste our time.
we cannot make the decision of whether one need to do this, that or the other because that often it is something that the individual needs to decide based on their own situation. there is no way to find out whether one passed the nclex based on the number/type of questions. you don't like the grading system, recording policy/cell policy, - then maybe you should either approach the higher ups or find another program. posting on the bb is highly useless. and, no it is not inhumane to make one wait 48 hrs or longer to find the result to the nclex.
and not every has answer for many questions....please, please, please!!! give us some vague clue at minimum to what you are posting about. so that those that may be able or inclined to help you, and that those of us that do not have the knowledge/inclination can pass it by.
why dont the mods create different accounts for actual RN's vs students and make it so that students may reply to any thread, but can only start threads in the student sections? perhaps by making them choose when they register whether they are a student or not. you could always lie, but maybe that would reduce the repetitive thread starting in the general boards

I will take this suggestion back to the staff area for discussion, but I can see several obstacles right off the bat.
As you mentioned, not everyone would be truthful. But also, many people are BOTH students and nurses. They are working while advancing their education and fit correctly into both categories.
In addition, there is repetition even within the student threads.
Then there is the idea that students eventually graduate, and that would mean a lot of work for the administration to change the accounts from student to nurse status as the individuals progress.
Another thought is that this board is open to anyone who wants to come here. We have had posts from patients, family members, doctors, and others. It seems awkward to restrict the posting parameters for students while allowing everyone else unlimited access.
Our best resource to handle this right now is the vigilance of other members who report posts that need to be moved.

So. . . students are in such a frenzy they post on whatever forum they see first? An urgent drug calculation question needs the answer asap from Flight Nursing? You want people in the Nursing Informatics forum to write your careplan with/for you because it's due tomorrow?
I suppose that would be fine if you were in a chat room, but urgent-gotta-have-the-answer-right-this-second questions are best-served taking the few seconds to post at the appropriate place.
