All of the school districts have school closings except for our college due to the windchill. I have clinical in the morning, and no where to send my kids. * sigh*

moongirl. . .the snowball will melt before it hits me. It'll be nothing more than a spray of warm water by then! All the wild peacocks around here will be coming around for a drink. :roll

nope.. I am packing it on dry ice! :)

Most of the schools in my area are on a 2 hour delay in the morning d/t the severe cold... When my 16 y/o daughter excitedly came in to tell me she said it was because the busses won't start. The word started going through the cell phone grapevine an hour before it was announced on the tv/internet as the call went out to teachers and their kids were calling their friends,,,and on and on...

My DD's school wasn't closed even though it is -9 with a windchill of -30. I told DH that we have to seriously consider moving somewhere warm when I am done with school. I am just not a winter person. I don't mind living somewhere where the only season is summer!

Bitterly cold here in Connecticut too. No school closings though. But last year all the schools around my town were closed due to windchill danger. Our school went to class as usual. My daugher was PO"d then but thankful in the Summer when they got out a bit earlier than her friends/relatives from other towns

One of the reasons I finally decided to go to LPN school was so that I knew I could find a job in warmer climate..I hate the cold, hate the snow, couldn't care less about the season changes..give me hot and humid! I think I was a baby born in the South and given up for adoption..and adopted by New Englanders!! I truly am a Southern girl at heart!

Poor achoo! so sorry. what a drag to find someone that early. Are there any high schoolers you know well enough to have them spend the night, so they're there in the morn when your kids get up? (they won't be having school either)

All that I can add to this is hospitals do not close for cold weather, there are patients that need to be cared for. You are going in to a field that never has days off because they close.

What will happen when you begin to work?

Not everyone is lucky enough to have family or friends to take care of the kiddo's when the school system decides last minute to cancel school. However everyone who has kids does need employment to care for those same kiddo's. It's just a fact of life.

One my first clinical day this past Thursday, I faithfully observed to the ed channel to see if school was canceled before taking my kids to the babysitter at 0530 in the morning. No such message. Traveled 30 min away to my clinical hospital and got wind from another student that district had cancelled school at 0615. Babysitter not able to keep kids until end of clinical due to previous medical appoint.

Thank God I have an awsome instructor who said she will work with me to make those hours up. However I'm not about to quite nursing school or forego taking a job just because OCCASIONALLY my family schedule and school/job schedule conflict.

Anyway, to the OP.....I can sympathize. I'm right there with you, trying to balance family, school, and what's best for both.

Ok, I am a bit whiny. It was -18 when I left this morning!! AHHH!!! Luckily my hubby got the kids to the day care early. They were taking them first come first serve.

We'll be buying a safe, 4 wheel drive vehicle next fall so I'll be able to get to the hospital during my first winter as a nurse in upstate NY! Luckily, DH works for himself, from home, so he can stay home with the kids if they have a day off.

Im an ohioan too(Daytonite)My kids are off today D/T windchill Back in the day,our nursing school was opened,it was horribly cold, and lake effect snow, still had to be there.Tring to break us in for the real world! When youre working ya cant easily call off cause its cold.Patients need us and your peers will be left shorthanded. And once ya get through nursing school, ya could work part time or agency and not have to be out in this nasty weather,Im fortunate enough to work P/T and not be out in this nasty !@#?! today.Minus3 degrees.

Where I grew up (Minnesota) we only had school cancelled if 18 inches fell overnight or if the actual temperature (not windchill, that was always worse) was colder than -40. Needless to say, I moved south at 18 and now visit a couple times/year.

Brr.. that's cold. We're a little warmer today but that just means it's snowing. And I'm bummed because my school did close. We were supposed to take our first exam tonight and I was psyched for it.

Our schools started out on a two hour delay then ended up closing thank goodness. I left work at 4:30 for a normally half hour or so drive and it took me two hours to get home. The roads were treacherous. To top it off I got behing a guy that had to have been drunk and almost caused about 5 or 6 accidents in the space of about 3 or 4 miles. Scary night and I"m glad to be home sitting near my fire in my jimmies..... No school tomorrow for my daughter. Somehow I doubt that my college closes and I have classes tomorrow. We shall see. Hope everyone is safe...
