So how are my fellow pre-nursing students doing in A&P 1? We are in week 6 and are finishing up chapter 9 of Saladin's text, and our 2nd exam should be next friday, but we will find out for sure later on this week. So far I am doing good, Got my first test back and I received an A. :) I am a little nervous about the tissues, I HATE histology, a necessary evil I suppose. Our first lab practical is next week and I am extremely nervous about that. Any pointers besides relax?
We just got our grades from our first lab practical and our first test. And I was really nervous after I took the test because evrybody was going around trying to compare answers and figure what was right and wrong ( I really hate that!) But thankfully I got a 94 on both the test and practical, its a little lower than what I used to make but shoot... I just started a new job, I have 3 kids, and I 'm taking 10 credit hours this semester so with that said... I'm pretty proud of myself!
Good Luck to everybody this semester, I think we'll need it!
I got a 100 on my first lab practical:-) And a 80 on my first lecture exam. We have weekly quizzes in lab and the points are out of 20 and the lowest I've gotten so far is a 17. For my first quiz in lecture, I received a 23 out of 25 so I'm doing way better than I thought I would! I have a 9 month old baby as well as a 7 year old so juggling school, work and kids and being out of school for like 5 years, I think I'll take these grades and fly:-)
Good luck to us all!
Hi everyone!!! What a wonderful thread :)
Kudos to those of you who have been proactive in your education and flourished despite not having the best professor.
I am taking anatomy online through Northern Virginia Community College (if anyone still needs to take this class and is reading this thread...you should totally look into this school.) We have an interactive CD Anatomy & Physiology Revealed Version 2..and I love the software. It helps you memorize everything by quizzing you.
A good website for review is anatomyarcade.com. They have "wack-a-bone" and "poke-a-muscle" exercises to help you remember where they are. This is the true beginning of our education. Whenever I'm having a hard time focusing on school work I try to remember that everything I know has the potential to save someones' life. That tends to give me the extra initiative needed to study.
I have sacrificed a lot for this class. I study everyday for a minimum of two hours. I write, write, write, write! I got a black composition book and I go through my book and write stuff down over and over. This serves as two purposes... #1.) I learn more, obviously. #2.) If I don't make a good grade I can look at my composition book and know I gave it one hell of an effort.
However, I have made A's so far. :)
http://www.mhhe.com/shier10 has an outline for each chapter of the book. You may not have the same book as me.. (heck i'm on the 12th edition now) butttt it is still useful trying to figure out the answers.
The University of Berkley has a podcast this semester of a lovely lady teaching Anatomy.
We are lucky to be students NOW..because we have a vast array of quality resources on the internet to help us learn. Honestly, if you want an A in anatomy you can get it no matter who your professor is. If you're assigned two chapters and you know everything you're supposed to know in those chapters... you really can't blame a bad grade on a professor. I have never spoken to ..or seen my professor and I'm doing great.
It's just repetition and memorization. You can not just pick up this book the night before a test and expect to do well. This class takes a lot of work. At my school they consider this class to be the "weed-eater". Meaning, this class is what weedeats out the nondedicated students who probably wouldn't do well as nurses anyway.
Good luck to each and every one of you..and again, kudos to those of you who have taken your education into your own hands without being depedent on a professor.
If you haven't made good grades so far it's not too late. You CAN turn it around. This semester will be over before you know it.. (even though many of us have A & P II to look forward to next semester.)
Another tip..which is probably corny and ridiculous......I have a picture of Dr. House next to my desk. Whenever I'm disgruntled and want to play playstation 3 or something instead of studying.. I look at it. I aspire to be like Dr. House. The person that people come to when they don't know something. That requires a lot of dedication and studying. It's embarassing sharing that, but it helps me so I figured I'd share.
Congrats everyone for the work you've accomplished so far. The histology and cells part is over (for now) :)
Have a great weekend everyone! :)
Congrats on getting an A on your first test! My A&P is going great! I was so lost that first few weeks when it was all about chemistry and stuff becuase I haven't done anything remotely like that since high school (I'm 30!). Now that we've moved on to the tissues, skin and now bones, things are much easier for my brain to comprehend! We had our first test already too, and I also scored an A (94) YAY! Our next test is next week (histology and integumentary), and then the following week we have our skull practicum in lab. The skull was my favorite thing so far - I have an excellent memory and I already have all the parts memorized. One tip I can share with you guys - right now since its close to Halloween, go out and buy a skull and skeleton from walmart or wherever! Even if you aren't taking A&P yet, so you'll have it when you do the skull and bones. It really helps to have it at home to refer to!

You really hit the nail on the head! I said something similar on another thread. My A&P teacher told us right out of his own mouth that the purpose of aspiring nursing students taking A&P prior to entering the program is to "weed out" those who can't succeed. You also don't have to be a genius. My IQ is average, I failed chemistry in high school, I left high school with barely a C average GPA and that was 12 years ago. But I'm dedicated. Like you, I have sacrificed alot to go back to school and put all my effort into this. I do not have a job - I am instead living on student loan money. I have two school aged children and a husband and a home to take care of. But everyone in my family knows that school has to be one of my top priorities right now. I sacrifice time spent with them in order to study. I remind myself that it's only for a while and that they will someday thank me for it. I also write, write, write so much that my carpal tunnel which hasn't bothered me since I was pregnant with my first child, has come back with a vengeance but I don't let it stop me.
It bothers me alot when people in my class, who are going for nursing or radiology which is also competitive at my school, complain about this or that. Get over it. Do whatever you HAVE to do in order to succeed in school. There is no excuse for not doing well. If you really can't do well in A&P, re-evaluate your career choice because it is ONLY going to get tougher from here.

It was going great for me...until my lab practical last night. I went into it feeling pretty confident, but as we were walking around answering and labeling I realize how underprepared I was. I will be lucky to get a 70 on it. I made a 92 on my unit test and have made 100's on all of my quizes so far but that lab practical killed me.
My teacher is pretty good. He is also a f/t chiro and says he just teaches because he likes to. His lectures are really great and he makes them really interesting. He also has all of his PP presentations online that we can download so that has been really helpful.
I need to figure out how to do better with my practicals if I am going to pull off a decent grade in this class.
