Is there anyway to retake the semester? Several nurses that I am friends with failed that particular semester and they were able to retake it and finally passed. I am sorry that this happened to you, but dont give up. If you do apply to another program, find out 1st if they will accept your grades from the 1st semester. You wouldnt want to start completely over if you didnt have to do so. Keep me informed and good luck.

I am about to start medsurg 2 with 14 people who failed LAST semester and they are all allowed one more chance...if your program allows you another chance I would go for it! Don't give up!! Trust me you will not be the first great nurse to ever have trouble. Good luck...I hope it works out!!

First, take a deep breath. then, look at yourself in the mirror and say, "I am a good person. I can figure this out. There is no problem that can't be solved. I can do this. Lots and lots of other people have been at this crossroad before me and they have been able to reach good solutions. I can do it, too."

Then, sit down and write down all of your choices. Retake semester, reapply to same school, try to go to different school, search other careers, whatever your choices are.

Then, under each heading, write down the pros and cons of each choice.

If you believe in prayer, ask the one you pray to to help you have clear thinking and to help you see what His choice for your career is (if you believe that He has a choice. I'm not trying to force religion on you, just telling you how I go about making big decisions.)

I also ask God to open an avenue for me, close off any wrong avenues, and give me sensitivity to hear/feel/sense His leading.

Often, He leads through other people. I ask my wife, my pastor, maybe a close friend or relative to be in prayer for me to get the answer I need. Then I fast and pray, study Scripture, wait on God for Him to reply. That probably sounds weird to those who don't do this. Sorry, I'm not trying to confuse anybody. It's just how I do, how I've been taught to seek guidance.

You might also want to see help from a guidance counselor or two and maybe take an aptitude (interests) test or two.

I believe the answer will come to you.

How did you pick Nursing originally? What is it about Nursing that interests you? What area are you thinking you'd like to work in? What exposure did you have to Nursing prior to going to Nursing school?

sorry about your situation. try talk to a councilor and see if you can retake it. what school is this? just wondering because i am about to make a decision between chico state for fall 2009 and san francisco state for spring 2010.

i retook the semester and failed again.. this time it was because the professor thought i had not improved based on her opinion/judgment/observation. sigh. that's why i'm considering LVN since i guess, RN was too hard for me even though i was studying a lot.

i already failed twice so i used my last chance. sigh. my prof thought i sucked in terms of critical thinking and being assertive.. so she rec'd lvn. ugh.

LPNs have to be able to think critically and be assertive.

By your "ugh" comment, you don't respect this level of nurse. I suggest a good hard rethink about what you want to do for employment.

sorry for your situation. that's about all i can say. only you know if nursing is truly for you. our program is the same for lpn's and rn's up to a certain point, then the lpn students exit out and the rn student's continue for another 3 classes: psychiatric nursing, advanced maternal/peds, and leadership/management.

I don't think the "ugh" was about being an LPN but about failing out and the instructor's comments.

I agree, grieve and then really look inside to see if this is what you want to do and have the capacity to do. If you decide then to continue to pursue nursing..than the LPN route is not a bad thing. I became a LPN at age 42 and will have my RN by December. It was nice being a LPN for awhile. I learned to be more assertive and could learn my job without worrying about being a leader too.
