racism?

Chicago can be a segregated city, but I've never really heard of racism in any nursing program though. I believe if you do the work and stay away from the garbage, you should be o.k. Hell I personally think anyone thinking about that kind of drama is not busy enough in nursing school. You should be too busy to think about anyway. Stay on your grind and worry about yourself.

Sorry to hear that, yes racism is still alive and well in general, and in nursing schools. I say do your best and apply don't let that deter your dreams sweetie. I agree with the above comment, you will be extremely busy. Show the "racist " professors that you are smart and the color of your skin color does not define who you are.

If you have heard this from multiple people I'd ask to meet with the program director to discuss the allegations in advance. If the school has an internal issue, it may encourage the program director to deal with it. At the very least the professors will be working hard to prove the aren't racist.

I have to say though, sometimes people blame issues like race or gender or a disability for an unfair situation when that's not the case. Sometimes it's the student's own fault and he/she isn't taking responsibility for their part in the problem. And sometimes there's just a personality issue. No matter what your race, you're not going to get along with everyone. Everyone has struggles in life and is treated unfairly at times. So I think it's important that you find out if the claims you've heard are legitimate. If they are, find another school. If they aren't, then do your best in the program.

I think it's really sad that we have to deal with this in today's world. I thought we might be getting past it, but it sounds like we're not. If I knew that a school had a prejudice against me for the color of my skin, sex, age, whatever, I'd be even more determined, but that's just me. I don't know if meeting with someone is a good idea. It could just make it worse. Where did you hear your info from? Was it former students, or just rumor mill type stuff?

ive heard it like six times, the first coupleof times i ignored it but now its bothering me but i wont let it throw me off of my goal. i will be a nursing student at Prairie State College. it was just discouraging

It could be that some people are trying to get in your head. We know that racism is still alive, we have and probably will continue to live with it no matter how well we do in life. Heck, look at what our president has to put up with!! Don't let anyone get in your head, stay focused and get after your goals in life. And there are a lot of other nursing schools out here in IL. You can do it!!!! :yeah:

Well, Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employment Act was supposed to make it so that everyone was equal, no preferences as to color of skin when applying for jobs. So it's not 'thanks to AA' that there's racial preferences, as it sought to do the opposite....but only the foolish would think that there IS such a thing as equality....any employer who seeks "diversity" WILL choose certain applicants because of skin color, ethnic background, you name it.

So, OP, the reality is that school is just a slice of life: some people will make preferences and allowances and others will ding you, all for the very same reason. Nothing you can do but be the best student possible and let your grades speak for themselves.

It is something I also consider about when I think of which school to apply to I even thinking of applying to a historically black college so I wont have to deal with it, but you know what if its not at school, its will be at your job or somewhere else, if none of us step up, nothing is going to change. Go to the best school of your choice that you want to go to. Record any instances of possible racism if they occur and report it as per the schools procedures to the top levels or get them exposed in the news papers.Things wont change until we do something about it. Don't let someone else steal your dream, it might not even be that way, even if your source might be reliable. Don't let this be your focus it will just make you look at everyone too harshly.

What are the reasons you initially choosing this school? are they the best State College program, are they well recognized? best pass rate? or is it just convenience?

For myself I'm also looking at number of males in that get in with various nursing schools, cause in my position I got a double wammy to deal with because I'm a double minority,black and male, trying to get into this field, and this is in d south, Florida to be exact, which I believe is worse than up there in Chicago. There's so many saying black women can't but all you got to do is look at Michelle Obama, there is nothing you can't do because of your skin color. So Keep your head up! What I do not understand is How do your friends even know that its racism if they themselves not going there?
