Sorry to say that you better get used to it, just a preparation for more to come. I have been a nurse for five years, working in a LTC facility. Although, I love the majority of my patients very much, I have experienced the most racist comments coming from their family and friends. If it's not a racist comment, they just CANNOT believe that I am the nurse taking care of their loved one. Needless to say, it has taught me to calm down, and not take things to heart. I do my job to the VERY BEST of my ability. This is my advice to you: 1) Everything you do says something about you, so make sure you are putting out phenomenal work. 2) Do not let anyone disrespect you. You want to be able to sleep at night, and there's always a professional way to get your point across. Do not give up! It is a very rewarding profession.

Instead of worrying about racism you should hone up your English skills...how do you expect to get in with spelling and grammer as presented in your first paragraph. Seriously; one of the skills of an RN is the ability to write and spell correctly.

Who cares what other people think...if you're serious about being an RN then you had better get a thicker skin. And please don't start with me; I was discriminated against as well but I didn't let it run my life.

You mentioned you're going to Prairie State College in IL. I attended this school and graduated with an AS. I never saw any racism in that school. In fact, the majority of the students in my classes were minority students. It's a great school and their nursing program has a very good reputation. I no longer live in the area, but there was a very diverse student body when I went there.

Just knowing the school the way I do, I can't imagine that racism would be an issue there. I was just there 2 months ago visiting some friends and stopped by the school to visit my old Microbiology professor. I'm not a minority, but I never saw or heard anyone making comments or treating others differently the whole time I attended school there. I'm just so suprised to hear this.

i don't know if you read the post or not but i knew there would be spelling errors, that is why i apologized for it at the start of the post. i don't understand why you even replied if you didn't have anything helpful to say. i never said i was going to let the racism get in my way from completed my goal. i just wasnt expecting it and needed to vent which is why i came here. excuse me for having feelings.

She apologized in her original post for the spelling and grammatical errors and informed us that she was using a smart phone to create the post. No matter how impeccable one's spelling, grammar, and phraseology may be, creating a perfect post on a smart phone is a difficult feat to accomplish.

Moreover, your post has at least one spelling error (read: grammer instead of grammar). Let's discuss the topic instead of extraneous issues, please. :)

Please take your time with your spelling and grammar when you write. You should have spell check on your iPad.

Part of me wonders if the people you've heard it from have been dismissed or in some way punished by the school? I've seen many, many students (not an educator myself, but work closely with a professor) claim anything they can think of when they're getting a bad grade, etcetc.

I would evaluate these sources critically, like you'll have to in the future.

If you've never witnessed it or have been a victim of it, then it is just hearsay. All I can say is...just keep doing your best and being a stellar student! The way you comport yourself in class speaks volumes to your personality and the way you're treated by others. So, I'm glad that you haven't experienced racism first hand in your school. I got a great education at Prairie State and I would like to think that everyone is treated fairly.

Racism is alive and well. Although, after hearing these rumors, I would suggest staying on your best behavior and just try to focus on getting the best grades possible. Many people deal with prejudice and racism in all avenues of their lives. Work, school, etc.

As for 'tyvin' and 'ImKosher', we're dealing with the topic of racism here, and the best thing you can comment on are typing errors??! Get real, and get over it!

goodness grief, why talk to people like that? I did not know these forums were like all formal and needed prim and proper grammer and dictation. Anyways, yes there's a point where one need to be thick skinned, then there's a point where one need to stop the madness, stop being pushed around being everyone puppet and tell people "get out of my darn face if you don't like me."

We are going to have, bosses, doctors in our face, admin staff, patients and family members as students, we going to have faculty, preceptors, training nurses for whatever reason, do not want a person to succeed, but we need to stick it out and strive to be united.

If you can get past it, make some friends (of all races) and gun it out. It'll make you stronger and your story will be something for others to look up to!

Don't let those jerks take away whats important to you or they win!
