Interventions without MD orders
I don't understand how we go from this "Just wondering what the reasoning behind this is? Do Drs not trust nursing judgement? I just didn't realize what people refer to as "autonomy" is actually just protocols." To judging up Novo's character and speculating how new he or she is or if this person would make a good nurse. Why do people on this board attack people on here so much? I feel as though some seem hover their experience or whatever else over people's heads AND go out of their way to make them feel small or demean them. I thought this site was a place to come to for information and support. I'm not saying everyone has to agree with everyone but I've seen so much of this behaviour on here it makes me sick. A Nursing board is the last place I would expect for people to treat each other like this. Just because someone thinks outside the box about stuff doesn't make them stupid, ignorant, "new", inexperienced, whiney, lousy nurse, or a bad nurse. The moral in this place really needs to come up and we need to start using our kindness and compassion towards one another. What good is being a nurse if we don't carry love in our hearts and support for each other?

Help me prep for my first practicum!
Hey boys and girls! I SURVIVED MY 2ND YEAR FALL TERM!!! Very happy about that. So, In january I'm going to have mainly my practicum/ clinics to focus on. I believe my clinics are 3 days a week on a geriatrics ward... I think the place I'll be at is a hospital. I'm happy and excited and I want to prep and I was wondering if you guys could offer some input and answer some questions. Any tips for making an impression on my instructor on the first day? Any do's and don'ts? Are you generally allowed to carry around a bag with your goodies like your stethoscope, scissors, etc? If so, what are some recommended things I should take with me. Should I practise my skills before hand? Any info you guys give is great! Thanks!

when your forgetting the material?
So... I've been trucking through, hanging in there. Today I decided to go do some review of my old subjects (med micro etc.) and i discovered I have forgotten quite a bit. Im worried I'm going to do a horrible job in the future. Anyone have any advice? Should I keep testing myself ever so often? what do you do if you forget?

Seriously final exams what???
I'm not done school yet but if your referring to the licensing exams I have heard it's based On theory skills however you will need ur math skills For Dosage calculations, and a good understanding of a and p to care for your patients and communication with doctors. A and p will also help u understand pharmacology and how one drug may help treat one thing or effect another drug.

Can you answer these study questions?
Hey boys and girls! I'm still trucking along in school but I have come to realize my study habits don't seem to be cutting it for getting the grades that I want. Right now I don't think there seems to be any available resources at school specifically for study help. I have asked teachers, peers and looked online usually getting the same generic answers. Some examples of generic advice are: Reread what you have read, Ask questions Look up more questions or read extra questions in your text Look up videos on the subject online Define what kind of learner you are Take plenty of notes Look at your classmates notes Record the lecture and listen to it again Organize your subjects Some helpful examples would be: Examples of effective note taking How should one be reading the material? ( Do I break it up into sections? Skim and then read?) What are some effective types of questions to be asking? If I were to record a lecture and have no problem understanding what the teacher is talking about, is there anything specific I should be listening for? How to balance out your subjects? How to organize your work? If anyone is out there that is able to share some ideas (even if you can answer one or two of the helpful examples) that would be awesome.

struggling student survived first year with health and anxiety problems
WARNING!! THIS WILL SOUND JUMBLED AND GARBLED BECAUSE I HAVE A HARD TIME ORGANIZING MY THOUGHTS. I can not believe that I managed to survive my first year of classes. The beginning boys and girls, I tell you.... was the HARDEST. In the beginning I took a bunch of science classes. I would study for hours on end and still manage to struggle and get crappy marks. I thought for sure I would fail. A few of my teachers were awful but after looking on rate my prof and talking to my peers it turned out a bunch of them just simply stink at teaching. I was tired of feeling like a drown rat all the time and I finally decided "yo, if I fail, I'll start of and try again. Whatever. It's not worth almost having a break down every other day." Somehow with this attitude I managed to complete the first part of the term with barley passing grades (im not afraid to admit it). All the time i spent thinking, I always here these stories of people working hard or not and some how managing awesome grades.... this is part of what was stressing me out and making me do poor. Once I stopped giving two craps, everything was easier however... I found out I had a few health concerns along the way. During this time I had gone to the doctor for one reason or another and I discovered I had a low platelet count and I needed some tests... ultrasounds blood work etc. Later on I had a slight enlarged lymph node... I'm a worry freak and I worried about these things in general like crazy. I kept thinking of great just what I need before tests and such. How will I pull this off?? I began to also worry that I would have to quit school due to these problems. Finally one day I told myself to shut the hell up, and deal with it when I get there.. somehow I pulled it off and managed to keep the worrying at bay enough so I could get through my studies. I also started going to church to help give my soul some kind of peace... I didnt want to go back to church in this point in my life because I don't like religion... but God and I were tight with eachother and I wanted to improve our relationship and I figured it might help. Shortly after I started going.. I was sleeping better... I struggled with doing well but little by little I managed to pull my marks up from just passing to average and a little above in some classes. I would work out and focus on feeling good and thinking in positive. Hard in the beginning but I told myself I no longer wanted anything negative to effect me. Life is too short for it. Finally I had my tests one by one get completed. Ultrasound found everything is good although I have little cysts on my kidneys... this will not cause me any real problems...and as it has turned out I have ITP... and a autoimmune condition with my platelets however.... things have been fine and I have had no real issues. Doc and i discussed treatment if I ever found myself falling into serious problems. The good news is, this currently effects my life in no way. The lymph node problem is just reactive and has no real issues. After one more test I should be able to say I have pretty good health. Again I know this all sounds super jumbled.. your wondering what is this crazy person trying to say??? I am not a awesome student at all but I try hard. Not just with the school work but life too. I hope anyone thats read this that had similar issues can see my struggle and get some kind of hope to carry on. We dont have to be perfect we just have to get through and be the best we can be. Blah...

Can someone tell me how to not be traumatized in med microbioogy?
Awesome stuff guys. I'm actually excited about the class. I'm not really concerned that I have anything wrong with me but just seeing the horrible ways to go... It's like if you gotta go, please not like that!!! Although I guess there are worse things...Anyway thanks for the responses I feel better. I think exercising good caution and puttin the rest of my worries to the back will be the best thing for this course.

Can someone tell me how to not be traumatized in med microbioogy?
Oh so I had my first class of medical mico biology. We have a wonderful teacher who really knows her stuff. In the class she showed us a video documentary of the meningitis outbreak we had in our city a little over ten years ago. (I remember being vaccinated and hearing about it on the news too when I was younger). It was becoming very serious I think it might have killed 2 or 3 people in less than a week... and started infecting and spreading fast. A few people that didn't die... had amputations, scars or neurological problems. Some that had it were lucky to escape with no issues. Anyway, part of the scenes were acted out but also had interviews with the families that were affected. As we watched the video I saw a lot of us tearing up because it was vey sad. Anyway I guess by sharing what the class was like, I'm wondering how does one not become a hypochondriac after studying these things? Or my bigger worry is, how do you not constantly feel fear for your loved ones? Does anyone have any coping mechanisms or something? Even this morning I still feel very sad.

The University of Alberta?
rng2013This is my first year of nursing and i gotta say I thought I was the only one!!! I hate the cbl too! I keep thinking this is ******** but so many people in the program don't seem to think anything. I kept wondering why people had a negative opinion of some u of a students! I kept thinking well we start clinicals right away, what's the big deal? Well now I know. I did my fall cbl classes and anatomy and physiology and I decided to go with the 5 yr program so I can really know my stuff inside and out because I'm not so sure cbl classes are goig to help much! Since I have a little more world experience I'm hoping I can still become a good nurse. I try to watch tons of practical videos so when I start clinicals I can perform well.

Ok I have to know what to say in his situation or what you would be allowed to say. I would want to politely say I you don't feel the best care is being given then you can go else where or please let me do my job.
