Stethoscope cover for men?

Nurses Uniform/Gear

Published

Hi everyone,

Just started clinicals last week and I came to the realization pretty quickly that I'm definitely going to be a nurse that needs a stethoscope cover.

I have sensitive skin and the rubber of the stethoscope is def going to be a problem without a cover.

I've been looking online, but so far I only see pretty feminine "scrunchie" style ones.

Anyone know where I can get a low-key more masculine cover?

Thanks in advance!

Can you use a needle & thread? Just buy some manly material & sew it into a tube. I think a cotton/polyester blend would be best.

I don't recommend a cloth stethoscope cover. They hold and pass germs around.

Stethoscope tubing is not made out of rubber (latex) so it shouldn't be a problem if you're latex- or rubber-sensitive. If you don't want to hang the tubing around your neck all the time like they do on TV ads (I could never do that anyway-- it was always falling off), just leave it around your neck when you pull it out of your ears; the metal parts will be on your neck and the plastic won't touch your skin anyway.

Agree, those cloth covers are fomites in the worst way. Our infection control nurse wouldn't allow them in the place. You can't alcohol them off in between patients and you KNOW they don't get washed and heat-dried every day like scrubs. A solution marketed for a nonexistent problem.

Or get one of those holsters and carry it on your hip, but you'd need to wash/clean that qd too.

Our hospital banned them also. Just put in a pocket if you have one.

They sell stethoscope holders, which clip onto your pants. Otherwise look on Etsy for a masculine cover. One time I saw one in there that looked like a man's tie. :roflmao:

I love the stethoscope holder/clip I got from Uberdoco. I tried others that didn't work. This keeps my stethoscope off my neck which prevents neck pain and I'm not setting my stethoscope down someplace- my pockets aren't big enough for it. I had a stethoscope walk off one day, so I like to keep it on me.

It's also apparently a TJC violation to have your stethoscope around your neck. When I had a clinical right around the time the facility was getting a visit we were specifically warned not to put them around our neck as it was a violation.

I've never heard of that.

Put it in your pocket. Almost no one wears it around their neck in real life.

In real life.... you're probably going to have to use the toy disposable stethoscopes for patients on contact precautions 90% of the time anyway. Most of us don't even bring stethoscopes to work anymore.

I used a thin black satin cover. I had to take the bell off to remove the cover for washing but this allowed me to deep clean and maintain the scope at this time.

I personally found that a very soft cloth like satin and the lack of wrinkles is what did the trick for me. Also made is fairly unique and easy to distinguish.

Look on Easy there are dozens of people making them - someone has to have a fabric that would be acceptable to you.
