Listing license on resume

Nurses Job Hunt

I know I shouldn't list my license number on my resume, but how to I display that I do have my state license. I'm not talking about where to list it, but more the wording to use to list it.

If I know your name and type of licensure, I can easily get your license number.

I've just never seen any reason to put it on the resume. Just more clutter.

Specializes in NICU.
I have been told that putting the license # on your resume gives someone the opportunity to use it. Identity theft.

Thank you klone.

It is public record. I can look up any health profession license and their home address in my state on the web.

Specializes in Family Nurse Practitioner.

My is listed as under Licensure and Certification section as

Registered Nurse

State of Xxxxx

License #xxxxxxx

Valid til 00/00/0000

In my state you can find anyone's license number with their name on the e-verification website, so it's hardly top secret.

In my heading I have Hiddencat, BSN, RN and then under licenses and certifications (which I actually put above work history) I have "Registered Nurse licensed in STATE" as the first item.

I list mine...they can find it searching the BON website with just your first and last name, anyone can.

Specializes in Psych ICU, addictions.

In almost every state--probably all of them--license numbers are publicly accessible on the Internet. Unless you're also listing your DOB and SSN on your resume as well, I wouldn't worry about listing your license number.

That being said, I keep my license numbers off because I need the space for other things. If I do list anything, I list it as "Registered Nurse Licensure: (states)" but that's usually only for resumes going across state lines so they know I'm licensed in that state.

HR is going to have the opportunity to steal your identity when you get the job anyway. As far as I know you can't trace your SS# from your license number, so I don't see the danger (if I'm wrong someone please tell me)

Posting from my phone, ease forgive my fat thumbs! :)

OP, I think what the instructors misunderstood and what I have been told--you can give your license number out (on a resume) because it is public knowledge; however do not make copies of your license itself and give it to someone. That's what people use to pass themselves as the person with the license. Not the number.

Employers can verify your license online, no need to make copies of the actual license.

I just say, "Current unrestricted registered nurse licensure in State 1, State 2, and State 3," (and more, actually, but you get the point). Then anyone can go find me in Nursys (except for the states that don't participate in Nursys, dammitol) or go to the state BoN for the others.

What? You can find the license number on the Internet. It isn't a secret.

Specializes in ICU, CM, Geriatrics, Management.

Don't see the need to list your specific license number on the resume. (Really, who cares whether it's 345567, or 356789?)

Waste of resume space??? Waste of the reader's/reviewer's attention???

Never would have thought to list my license on my resume, I guess I figured it's implied that I have one. However, you can look up anyone's first and last name and get their license number online so I don't understand the danger inlisting it.
