Meeting AHPRA requirements as a International Trained Nurse from the Philippines

World Registration

Heard a rumour that 2 years experience is coming in to assessment requirements for overseas nurses as nurses with experience are only required as in line with the immi skilled assesssment requirements, needing RN's with a specialisation/experience, aged care, acute etc.

This is in line with other countries requirements for overseas nurses and the excellent numbers of local graduates in the coming months.

Specializes in MCN.

How long does it take for the IELTS testing authority to send the results to AHPRA?

Yikes, where did you get this info? Does it tell when it will take effect?

Hi there Teeyara! When did you graduated? I'm on the same boat as you. I just graduated last year and just started working *sighs* But I really want to go to Australia soon if that's possible since I don't have much experience yet. :(

hi Riiko! I just graduated last April 2012. LOL. At least you've got some working experience already. I've read somewhere that a fresh grad w/o experience can still work in Australia. Experience only matters when applying for bridging programs ( some schools require a certain length of experience for you to be accepted) and part-time work while studying.

Wow! A really fresh grad then! My working experience is just a few months, so it isn't really that much yet. I opted for the bridging program because it's cheaper, and studying there for more than a year is so expensive. Is it okay if I add you on FB so we can chat there? :D

Hi,

I'm still waiting for my LOE from AHPRA and I just have a couple of questions that I've been wanting to ask:

1. I'm eyeing to take my BP, if I ever do, somewhere in NSW, however, it seemed that the schools that I had been looking into require at least 2 years of hospital experience to which, I'm afraid, I am under qualified. Could anyone give a list of schools in NSW that offers BP for overseas applicants with less that 2 years hospital experience?

2. I was also considering the possibility of taking a short course in Nursing (If my AHPRA application would be rejected/dismissed) other than ARNTP. Is that possible?

1. Have you the approved list of bp providers on the AHPRA website? There is only one course in NSW and that is College of Nursing.

Only the old victorian nurses board appeared to allow private institutions to run this important course, So most of the courses are in Victoria at this time along with the 2 universities.

2. If your course is declined, which I doubt, as the nursing board in Australia seems very open on their interpretation of nursing standards and education institutions when it comes to assessing nurses from other countries compared to nursing education in Australia.

Your nursing education provider is supposed to be on a par with nursing education in Australia, this means taught by nurses in a university, with much experience doing research in nursing, expanding nursing research, increasing nursing profession profile and with high degrees of master phd , which is not always the case in countries that have high nursing emigration.

You are then given the pathway to Australian nursing registration by completing an 8 week course, no nursing experience, sometimes no clinical nursing experience since graduation 3-4 years -still accepted - No one has every posted that they were not accepted as an RN as long as they completed a BP or uni course.

IF they do, which I doubt again, find your course not adequate, you will have to do a course that they have deemed appropriate, ARNTP may not be enough in that case.

The biggest worry would be finding a job afterwards if you have little experience as an RN. This is why I take it, that the schools are now implementing the 2 year work rule, as they will be sure the nursing student will have a certain standard of nursing and not cause them headaches and have a better chance to get a job.

@ceridwyn: Hello! I know you referred to this as a rumour but if it were true, do you have an idea when this would take effect? Further, do you know when AHPRA and/or NMBA "officers" convene to discuss changes and when these changes are usually implemented? (E.g., every 2 years, or 1 month after they convened, etc.) Thank you! :)

I have a registered nurse license in Illinois which I didn't renew. (I didn't practice the profession there.)

Does anyone know how to process the request for a Certificate of Registration Status or Certificate of Good Standing from them?

I've already sent an inquiry to the email address provided on their Department of Financial and Professional Regulation's website. However, if any of you knows the answer or has processed the request for the same document/s, please share the steps here (or send me a private message, if you wish). I'd appreciate it. :)

P.S.

How is it done in other states? TIA :)
