When did it become ok to put someone down because they are NOT an RN?

Mothers day with the family, everyone was sitting around the table. I chose this opportunity to announce that after 2 years of hard work (pre-reqs and the VN course), that I have not only graduated with honors, but also passed the NCLEX. In the midst of my personal joy and praise (well earned in my opinion), a family member (who is a medical assistant), interrupts everyone and says, “Yea but LVN’s are already phased out” … “No one uses them no more”. The whole room went silent for a few moments and then the topic of conversation changed to vegetable gardens. What happen to my moment? Not to sound shallow, but I wanted my moment!

The biggest kicker, toward the end of the day, he was greatly praised for just the THOUGHT of going to RN school. He said, “Yea, I went to the college the other day and I’m going to sign up for the wait list for the RN program …. Only 2 years and I’m in”. OMG … THERE ARE PRE-REQS!!!! You can’t just sign up and magically get in! And again, what about ME? I am in school FULL TIME for my pre-reqs to the LVN to RN bridge program, while doing the LVN! GRRRRR!

Ok, I just had to vent. Yesterday I was crushed, but today I AM MAD! :angryfire

You know what ask him just like some one else said can he assist in saving a life, take care of a newborn, hold a dying pts. hand, no he cannot just being an MA, I rely alot on my Lpns, there wonderful and deserve better, just like my step grandmother said when I became an Lpn before I went to Rn school, she said so your half a nurse hey I told her no Im a NURSE:balloons: and you know what I worked on a med-surg unit at a small town hospital and sometimes us Lpns were the only nurses you could find on the floor actually caring about your loved one!

That is terrible to ruin your moment like that. My mother in law said something similar "LVN's can't work in hospitals." (Upon hearing that I graduated.) NO KIDDING! What a way to ruin my moment. She is a CNA. I actually had a big party at my house when I graduated and all family was very supportive, except her. Her statement was made before the party.

Congrats! And your relative would probably be the type to say "you should have been a Doctor" if you announced you had just completed your RN degree.

C O N G R A T U L A T I O N S!!!!!!!!!!!!!:balloons:

You should of turned his 5 minutes of fame around on him. When he proclaimed he was gong to be a god almighty RN in the future, you should of asked why he wasn't going to go to med school to become a dr.

Congrats!!!! My journey has only just begun.

Dear Gingerbell, you are to be highly commended, for your accomplishment. All LPN's/LVN's know what you went through, to get your License. Also, I don't know what state you are in, but we have not been phased out! I think a lot of people, hate the idea, that we go to school, and receive our License, and get paid, in some cases, almost as much as an RN! Be Proud!

Yes, congrats gingerbell. Being an LPN is somethings to be proud of no matter what anyone says.

Oh, how absolutely insulting, especially before your party...we work everywhere. It may be true that some hospitals do not hire us, but there are plenty that do.

Also, there will be more opportunities available to the LPN than an MA. In fact, if an MA were to apply for a position in a hospital, they would either have to obtain a CNA certificate or work as an aide, and not utilizing many of the skills they learned to become an MA.

Congratulations !!! you have a lot to be proud of!!Its usually these people ignorant of the nursing field that say such things. It seems LPNs make more money than medical assisstants,at least in my part of town.

You know it's funny how people make some of the most asinine remarks about things they know nothing of. How would your MIL know what an LPN/LVN can do and where she can work. I don't know how it is in Cali but in my town LPNs work all over the hospital from med/surg to ICU. For any and everyone who's been put down by ill wishers keep your heads up because LPN school is no small feat by any means.

I wish Cali was like the other states, but up here we as LVN's are pretty limited. So MIL was right in saying no LVN's in the hospitals, but it was the timing that hurt. I earned that LVN title and want to enjoy that graduation day. I don't need to be brought down. She works as a CNA in a nursing home and figured I would end up in a nursing home the rest of my career as an LVN. LTC wasn't for me and I work for the state now and love my job. She hasn't bugged me about being "just an LVN" since graduation so life goes on.

To those that earned their LPN/LVN license - congrats!!! That NCLEX is a bear and the course work leading up to it isn't a picnic either! You worked hard and did it - go ahead and jump up and down (on the naysayers toes even!).

Gingerbell, next time your family member starts blathering on about how he's "going to be an RN", just pat him on the shoulder and with a sweet smile, say "let me know how that works out for ya, ok?" and walk away. He really doesn't deserve more of a response than that, and when he's in the waiting game (or if he gets in, in the stress-filled nursing school) he'll realize just what you meant .

Hey everybody, thank you for all the wonderful support and personal stories, it has helped me so much.

I thought I would just add one last closing note on this thread. For a job (career) that I was told was already phased out, I am so totally and completely overwhelmed with job interviews AND job offers (all in acute care except one). And I am absolutely loving it! I can't wait to start working with patients! (doing the new LVN dance , there is one right?)

I am so happy with my decision to be an LVN while I pursue my RN! No regrets what-so-ever!
