Working as a stripper AND a nurse

Nurses General Nursing

Hello everyone. I was wondering, is it detrimental to my job as an RN if I am also stripping on the side for additional money? Can I be fired for this? I know there are morality issues (for some) and such with this, but is it legally wrong? I live in southern California by the way. The salary as I make as a stripper is far greater than any nursing job out there. The reason I'm also working as a nurse is for the benefits, retirement, and job security when I'm older and can no longer strip.

More and more employers are doing this "unofficial" kind of background check these days. And more and more people are snapping pictures with their cell phones. Once your image is out there, it's out there, with or without your permission. No going back and unringing the bell.

One job site posted a story about a young man who was on the verge of being offered a high-paying professional job. At the last minute, someone in HR decided to check a few online personality sites and found a page that played up his party-hearty lifestyle and showed pictures of him that would have made his mother blush. He did not get the job.

You might not post anything unsavory, but that doesn't mean others won't.

And you might not be in the job market at the moment, but naughty pictures don't expire.

Because this kind of checking is done under the radar, you may never know why you were turned down for a job that seemed like a perfect fit. Your activity doesn't have to be illegal to disqualify you as a serious candidate in many eyes.

No condemnation. Just food for thought.

Remember the ER RN who was the star of that show about wanting to marry a millionaire? Nothing illegal about what she did, but she lost her job over it. And was having trouble getting another job afterwards and lost her mortgaged home, last I heard. Risky business.

Hmm... do you really like having two part time jobs: one that you don't like but only want for benefits and the other that is not really suited for an educated person but pays well? Maybe you should just find a job that you enjoy and that has benefits...

An educated woman can be an exotic dancer. Dropping out of H.S., etc isn't criteria for being hired.

When the pictures hit the newsstand, word got around very quickly that it was their receptionist...You know what they did? They FIRED her.

You know why? They fired her because the managing partners said that there was so much "talk" in the firm about her photo shoot, that they were afraid she would be the victim of sexual harrassment...they felt she put herself at risk, and they said that for HER OWN protection...they terminated her. Even though she had not made any complaints of sexual harassment.

In other words...they squashed the problem before it got started.

She sued...and lost.

No, they looked for a BS excuse to get rid of her and they found one. How is what they did any different from telling a woman that she got attacked because of her clothing?

That firm must be staffed by highly educated men who are successful lawyers. Yet thay can't be trusted to keep sexual comments or actions to themselves? Heck, they are LAWYERS! They know better than anyone the ramifications of sexual harrassment charges. I don't buy the "Oh, he's a man, he can't help himself." excuses that some people hide behind.

Specializes in EMS, ER, GI, PCU/Telemetry.

if you're happy and you're making good money, then have at it. the thought has actually crossed my mind but i think i would only be degrading myself. i have a friend whose a real estate agent that strips for extra money and has no issues with it when we're out and someone calls her by her stripper name when they recognize her.

i just don't think that i, personally, could deal if a patient/family member/coworker recognized me. i would rather pick up extra hours or get a 2nd job.

but if you're good with it... then more power to you :)

Specializes in psych. rehab nursing, float pool.

Sadly many or the places we are employed in have employee handout which have vague references to living our lives morally. Just exactly what does that mean and who determines it?

.

It seems with the current big brother mentality running rampant in our country anything is possible. Our personal lives are no longer just our own business.

You never know how it could catch up to you later and have a detremental effect.

Doesn't this happen in nursing also? :D

Very true... However, in this economic climate- the excuses etc. don't really much matter. Anymore it boils down to "if I lose my job, I can't keep this roof over my head... Can I get fired for this?" And in most cases- the answer is YES. Whether it's expressed as a direct reason or not- anything from ones religious preference to whether they can work mandatory overtime because they have/don't have kids to being a stripper is fair game for firing justification. SO- if one can afford to lose the job, they are free to do whatever they please. If they can't- they will want to think twice before engaging in controversial matters.

THanks for for the replies everyone. I looked at the paperwork I got with my RN job and all it says is I'm allowed to have outside employment as long as it doesn't interfere with my job as an RN. Like I said earlier, the amount of money I make compared to an RN just isn't comparible. In a couple of hours I make 1-2 (sometimes 3) days of salary as an RN.

If there was a market for a fat, bald guy you better believe I would be hitting a pole to make a few extra dollars. I say do what you're comfortable doing. I just suggest you don't use the IV poles at work to practice.

Specializes in RN, BSN, CHDN.

They wouldnt employ me but they would pay me to go away and behave LOL

Specializes in Operating Room Nursing.

I highly doubt any of the patrons at the strip club would recognise you, they wouldn't exactly be staring at your face? Unless of course you decide to work at the hospital naked...:D

Specializes in thoracic, cardiology, ICU.

one of the dancers i worked with was working on his PhD in physics. He told about his research grants, and how dancing gave him extra side money and a good work out. It's pretty easy to write someone off just because of the job they pick, but actually working in that environment definitely taught me that people tend to have pretty amazing stories to tell when you listen whether its another stripper or even the patrons.
