What Baffles You?

So I have come across this a few times. I am holding a straw to a persons lips and they drink and drink and drink and pretty soon they are waving their hands for me to stop. Stop what?! You don't have to keep sucking on the straw just because it is in your mouth. I think the universal sign of I'm done please remove the straw should be to stop sucking on it and open your mouth! I have had a few people have to catch their breath and make comments about me giving them too much! What? I don't get it.

Same- I don't see HOW an automatic cuff could be more accurate, as long as you're doing it right.

What I was told is that the manual ones have to be calibrated too, but since they are rarely used, are often forgotten in that regard. So for that, automatic is often more reliable.

Family of 90 yr old, completely demented, bed bound pt with terminal illness, bed sores, bowel/bladder incontinence, peg tube, etc, insists that pt remain full code and everything possible continue to be done.

When Grandma passes away, her SS checks stop arriving every month.

Really? I'm surprised they would tell you that. Provided you're using proper technique it would seem to me that manual BPs are more reliable. Whenever I get an out of range BP on the vitals machine, the first thing I do is recheck manually, and the manual BP is the one I report to the RN/doctor/whoever.[/quote']

One of their main points was that the automatic cuff is more standardized so across the board it's a more average measurement so If 10 different people listen and hear slightly different things.

I work in homecare, but still some things the parents say baffle me..

Mom: I didn't have any sterile water to clear the suction catheter with,so I used purified water."

I said "purified water isn't sterile, and the trachea is sterile"

Mom" its all I had".

Ok.

Pt is on 24hr 02. I noticed Tuesday his 02 wasn't on. Mom said the concentrator was beeping,so she turned it off. She said the pulse ox was beeping too,so she turned that off.

She said she just waited until I came 5 hrs later to figure it out.

I asked"why didn't you just bring the small 02 tank upstairs?

She said"i didn't want too".

Alert and oriented patients who begin bleeding for one reason or another (most recently due to pulling out their IV accidentally) who just stand there letting it bleeding all over the place while awaiting the nurse to arrive. I truly am baffled that anyone would not know to put some pressure on it rather than letting blood drip onto sheets, floor, tray, etc etc.

hopefully you contacted CPS????

This surprises me as well, Brandon. Especially if a patient has an an arrhythmia or is tremulous, a manual is the best thing!

Specializes in M/S, LTC, Corrections, PDN & drug rehab.

I just resigned from a job in corrections & it bothers me to NO end the amount of sick calls that the detainees put in. Some would complain of constipation & when I would ask when their last BM was, it was TODAY! What the eff! You're not constipation! On top of that they would have either multiple issues on one sick call OR have one issue & then bring up a bunch when I would go & see them. I would get soo irritated. Thankfully if they irritated me I could speak my mind & deny them the visit.
