Used CPR on my neighbors toddler today... it wasn't enough... warning, graphic..

I can't sleep.... today was awful. I work night in the ICU, all adults, never pediatrics. I was sleeping today and woken up by my husband yelling for me, he said there was a baby in the lake (we have a large retention pond next door. ) I bolt out of bed and run outside in my pajamas to find the neighbors attempting CPR on a couch on their porch- I jump in and grab the child off the couch and place him on the floor and resume CPR.

He was saturated, blue, and so cold- no one knew how long he was in the water. I didn't say a word to anyone, just went into autopilot whispering the compression counts and working until the ambulance finally arrived and the EMT placed his hands over mine to take over. He asked quietly if I had any response and all I could do is make a tiny nod no.

the breaths were the worst, I can't even describe the sound , but I know I was getting air into his lungs, but god there was so much water in his lungs. Evertime I try to sleep I hear that awful noise and I keep hearing the moms cries and her repeatedly saying I'm sorry to the other people. The man (turns out it was grandpa that found him) was so upset, he kept hitting the wall with his hands and screaming for help.

I thank god god for my training, autopilot kicked in and during the crisis I tuned out all of the distractions and just did the CPR. I can't imagine he will make it but the officers said he had a pulse and was on the ventilator at the hospital as of this afternoon, no updates since then.

I have done CPR before but at work, this was my first time outside of work and with a child. I hope to never have to do it again. I have so much respect for nurses who work with pediatrics. That was horrible.

Bless you darlin' you did all you could. If that baby has any chance, it's because of you. Treat yourself kindly, talk to people about what happened. Maybe organize a neighborhood CPR First Aid Child Safety training.

Another update from a neighbor across the street- they said they are going to try to take off the "heart machine" tonight and the lung machine tomorrow.... none of my neighbors speak English as a first language so maybe they are confused?? I can't think of what heart machine they are talking about unless it is pressors?? CRRT? No idea...

NursinginChaos---I am so sorry for the family. I am so thankful that you were there and knew what to do and did your best. Prayers for the little guy and the family. As for yourself---talking to the chaplain at work is a very good idea. Do whatever you need to do to care for yourself during the post event trauma that you are experiencing and will experience for awhile. Peace to you as you process all that transpired.

I am so sorry you (and this family) have gone through this. You did your best and I applaud you! Go easy on yourself and if you develop obsessive thoughts or flashbacks (as some do in such traumatic situations), don't be afraid to talk to a professional.

Gentle hugs.

God bless you (if you subscribe to that, and whatever entity you worship if you do) for being there, waking up, and running out to help half wake.

I can't lie and say I know how that feels … in 23 years I've never had to do CPR off the clock, but come it may.

I keep a set up of things I may need in my car trunk in the event I come upon a crash - I only wish getting my brain into the proper mindset was half as easy.

I'm sure you don't want to hear this, but you are a hero.

Prayers he makes it.

Prayers for peace of mind for you.

XOXO

Probably ECMO

You did everything humanly possible for the kid. Whatever the outcome, you are awesome. But there's a good chance that if he doesn't make it, you're going to suffer from PTSD. Please go ahead and talk to the chaplain, and if you still have the dreams, or uncontrollable crying or whatever, go ahead and get professional counseling. You shouldn't let any feelings of guilt wreck your life. You are incredible.

As others are saying, please make sure you talk this over with a professional to help you sort through the feelings. I know that doing CPR without team support and especially on a child can be very traumatic. During my community health rotation in nursing school, I was placed with a school nurse who I shadowed at a high school for a couple weeks. A couple months prior one of her students (with pre-existing cardiac problems) used bath salts and cocaine I believe and ended up going into full arrest at school and the nurse did CPR for the first time in her life. The girl lived and recovered and actually came to visit the clinic when I was there. Anyhow, the episode was very traumatic for this nurse and she ended up in therapy to cope with it all.

Not sure what area you live in, I recently was 2nd on scene for a fatal MVA, (could do nothing) and my local PD/FD had a CISD and invited me to particiapte and I found it very helpful. Small town, everyone knows everyone so that is probably why. It was a teen.
