Yay! Esme got to come home before the holidays!!

This Thanksgiving.....I am thankful I am finally, blessedly home after 7 months of hospitalization and I am happy to be alive after my brush with death in April. I was told I was one of the sickest patient they had ever seen.....creepy when you think about ALL the sick patients they see on a regular basis.

God Bless the staff at MGH especially the ICU and my team of doctors with the ICU staff for saving my life. I owe you BIG TIME!

Esme!!! What a great gift to have you come and post again! We were all pretty worried. You are such an integral part of this community. I'm so glad you are back, and I hope you continue to recover and get stronger every day.

Imma do this just to make my kids mad...

Happy Thanksgiving, and welcome back Esme!

Okay, well...

One day I was making a turkey- this was actually Christmas and not Thanksgiving, but it was still a turkey. I took the turkey outside the oven to "rest' and was heading upstairs to make some room for the upcoming meal...

Suddenly, a shot rang out!

My son Ralphie, who most certainly did not shoot himself in the eye with his new Red Ryder Daisy Air Rifle with a compass and this thing that tells time, ran inside crying that a giant icicle fell off the garage and hurt his eye! Those icicles have been known to KILL people!

I took him upstairs to wash off his eye, while the Old Man read his funnies and eyeballed the turkey.

(I saw a gleam in his eye and told him to leave the turkey alone, as it still had a half hour to cook, and he could get worms. Again.)

Just as we were finishing cleaning Ralphie's wound with Lifebouy soap, a cacophony of barking and yelling and hillbilly music erupted from down below.. The Bumpuses' Dogs!

I ran downstairs in time to hear the Old Man bleating "Sonsabiiiikches,,,Bumpuses!" after the last departing hound, who was running out the broken screen door with a drumstick in his mouth.

The heavenly aroma still hung in the house. But it was gone, all gone! No turkey! No turkey sandwiches! No turkey salad! No turkey gravy! Turkey Hash! Turkey a la King! Or gallons of turkey soup! Gone, ALL GONE!

OH FUDGE!

We ended up going to out local Chinese Place for dinner and sang rousing chorus after chorus of Jingle Bells.

We still talk about that turkey to this day...

Wait! Did your son, Ralphie, have a fight with Scott Farkus, the kid with yellow eyes, just days before Christmas that year???

I'm so glad somebody resurrected this old thread. I had of course forgotten all about it 3 years later. It's been a bittersweet walk down memory lane for me. My amazing Mom passed away not too long ago and this is the first Thanksgiving without her epic meals for 50 people when less than 10 will actually be there. It's certainly not going to be the same, but I think I will have to way overcook this year just to honor her memory.

Then there was the Thanksgiving when I was taking the turkey partway out of the oven to give it a good basting. Unfortunately, this maneuver caused the turkey, golden brown and a thing of glory, to slither out of the roasting pan and onto the kitchen floor in a rush of melted butter. I use A LOT of butter on roasted poultry, so there was a rapidly spreading sea of it on the linoleum to deal with along with the bird. Dismayed, I cut loose with a stream of colorful invective as I hoisted the turkey onto the counter ("Just wash it off, it'll be fine" was my husband's contribution to the festivities) and wondered how the hell I was supposed to salvage the centerpiece of our Thanksgiving feast. Meanwhile, the family was gathered together near the apartment-sized kitchen, staring at the mess...not one of them knew what to do. I barked out a few orders from my vantage point in a corner, which was the only place the river of butter hadn't yet reached. My oldest girl brought me the mop and promptly fell on her butt in the grease; I knew that time was of the essence and I didn't want that stuff to congeal.

Luckily, my sister was a little more graceful, and she grabbed a roll of paper towels out of the bathroom and began wiping the kitchen floor vigorously while I chased her work with the mop. We got it done quickly and everybody just stayed out of our way while we scrubbed. Now that the floor was clean, there remained the question of what to do with the turkey, which was covered in the detritus that kitchen floors tend to collect. I refused to serve it; my husband, on the other hand, was hungry and determined to get that bird on the table. So he rinsed it in warm water, patiently plucking off all the gunk, rubbed some more butter and seasonings on it, and popped it back in the oven.

I didn't eat any of the turkey---I worked in a hospital, and I've never believed in the five-second rule. But no one ever got sick from it, so it worked out OK. This story happened many years ago, but it's re-told every year when we prepare the traditional Thanksgiving turkey.
