5. how much do you make a year? it depends on how often my shifts get canceled. your shifts are not guaranteed if you work at a nonunion facility. virtually everything is nonunion in texas.

6. what do you like about your job? the flexibility of being able to pick and choose the days that i want to work.

7. what don't you like about your job? i have no benefits such as health insurance or a retirement plan. the visitors and family members of the patients can be hostile on occasion, and i'm still forced to be nice to them because management values the results of their customer service surveys highly.

Staff Nurse Family Birth Center

With the 15% extra in lieu of benefits, I make just under $60.00 and hour. Shift Differential of $2.75 on top of that.

34 years experience.

I work per diem and my yearly pay could be unlimited, however, I work per diem in order to have lots of time away when I want it. So my yearly income wouldn't be helpful for you. I get put on low census before anybody else, but that is okay with me. We are unionized and nobody is safe from low census, but there is a protocol as to who gets called and when.

I love my co-workers, and I love Labor and Delivery.

I have a strong dislike for Administrative decisions that have nothing whatsoever to do with actual patient safety or outcomes.

I also dislike Floating due to Administration refusal or inability to properly staff other departments. Thinking I am qualified and capable of doing much on any other unit after 34 years of "birthin' babies" is folly.

I am ramping down toward retirement...Two more years and I will gladly say Adios.

wow! looks like I got a pretty great response! is anyone a nurse practitioner?

What I like about my job is the patients and what I hate is mostly administration coming up with new procedures and bs papetwork to make our jobs harder but to cover their a**.

what's cost of living like where you are?

Specializes in CT stepdown, hospice, psych, ortho.

I always see people ask about Southern California so for a nurse with five years or less experience with a BSN you can expect roughly:

Staff nurse: between $33-37 per hour with $3-5 shift diffs and all hospitals offered free HMO insurance

Permanent Charge nurse, $39 hour + $4-7 differential for nights + weekends
