Dual Careers

Nurses General Nursing

Specializes in Med-Surg, NICU.

To those of you who work as nurses (PT or FT) and have a second job (PT/FT), what is that other job you work? One thing I love about Nursing is that you can work a shift on the weekends and have another career during the week (say school teacher or an accountant).

So to all those "dual career" nurses, what are your two jobs? Do you like working these two jobs? And if so, do you prefer your nursing job to your other career or vice versa?

Thanks in advance!

Specializes in Hospice.

FT nurse at LTC, part-time EMT-A. I was an EMT for 13 years before I became a nurse. The jobs complement each other well.

Full-time Nurse, part-time EMT-I.

Nursing pays the bills, but my heart belongs in the field and on a rig.

Years ago, psych nurse full time/ medical aesthetician part time.

Specializes in Skilled Nursing/Rehab.

When I become a nurse, I may "coach" a local show choir or teach some voice lessons. Currently, I am a middle school music teacher. Teaching is super draining and I don't think I would want to work another job on the weekends unless I absolutely had to!

Specializes in Med-Surg, Cardiac.

Full time RN. Part-time casual Paramedic.

I've been an EMT almost 30 years and a paramedic almost 27.

Went to nursing school a few years ago because I wanted a roof over my head and heat or air conditioning.

Specializes in Cath Lab/ ICU.

Full time cath lab with 15 days of call/month

PD ICU

Notice the number of EMS guys you see?

I hope to remain an officer, of some sort, after I get into nursing. I guess it's my first love.

Classical musician here -- I usually have a church organist position "on the side."

Specializes in Trauma Surgery, Nursing Management.

DMAT member, but we are only called to deploy during disasters.

Since after graduating I could and still can only find a PRN position and I still work part time at Target :( to make ends meet and to keep discount. If you call that dual careers :)

Specializes in Home Health Care.

Nurse, mother and 7th & 8th grade certified Cheer-leading coach.:anpom: It really depends on the day which occupation I prefer. The pay & my mental sanity is so much better being a nurse.
