Does your hospital have a prayer or some other inspirational message overhead?

Every Wed and or Thur, when our chaplain is at our facility (hopefully full time) she does a nice message or prayer for the family and staff. I really enjoy them. It sort of helps center my day.

When babies are born, they play "Happy Birthday"

Anyone else have something like this?

.... I do like the inspirational messages in the morning. They are inspirational for healing and dealing with difficult days....

And that works for you. Not a one size fits all world. I think Stone Temple Pilots "Unglued" should be broadcast overhead whenever there's a code blue. I would find that inspirational. And it also fits the pace....

Inspiration in the morning.... I like cee lo's original "f you", swamp dogg's "total destruction to your mind" sets the mood as well. Works for me but maybe not for you. Overhead for all? Probably not.

Exactly, it is a not one size fits all. Again, read my posts. I'm not trying to sell my neutral views on anyone. I do work with people that roll their eyes. Guess what? That is OK too!

As for your songs, why not. I'm game for anything. ;)

ETA: Haven't you noticed how different hospitals are? It is fascinating to me to see how other hospitals do thing, from the controversial songs to policies. I learn this way, don't you?

I went to nursing school St. Mary's, of course the hospital has the same name and part of Pallotine Missionary System. They still have a morning and evening prayer. Everyone who works there or is a patient knows this and it isn't a big deal. I liked that about the hospital.

One Catholic hospital at which I did clinicals held mass every day at noon in the chapel, and it was televised live on one of the available TV channels. All pts had access to it. It was then rebroadcast at various times throughout the day (maybe 3 times?). I thought that was a nice compromise: those who wanted to watch it could, those who didn't, didn't have it forced upon them. It also wasn't blaring over a loudspeaker, interrupting or disturbing the going-ons in the hospital.

Seems like that would be a better way to go about it.

I work in a VA facility. We have a multidenominational service daily as well as catholic mass. Pts can choose to watch if they want. We also have ministers from other faiths who come here to visit patients. We try to cover everyone's spiritual system.

I work for a Catholic Hospital, so there are prayers/inspirational words all over the hospital. And yes, when a baby is born, a nursery rhyme is played (which I personally prefer over Happy Birthday). I hear it played at least once or twice a shift. I never once heard a patient say anything bad about it being played (I float between a med/surg and an acute rehab unit)-its mostly been positive along the lines "its good to be reminded that good/healthy events still happen" and that its "motivation" for them to get better.

Our hospital has 3 soft chimes that play at 11 am and 8 pm. Theses chimes are different things for diff people.

For me, they are a reminder that what I do is more than just getting the IV started or the chemo done --it's about the person. I've seen some people say a quick prayer when the chimes sound.

Another nurse I work with calls it a "team" chime and uses that moment to check on all members of team to see if everyone's doing ok. Another nurse I know says she uses that to cue her to take 3 deep breaths and center herself.

And some just ignore the sound.

I like them and generally, if I tell patients what they are and what they mean to me, they seem to appreciate the thought.

The only thing our hospital over head pages are emergency codes.

I can't even imagine how I'd feel as a pt if I finally got ot sleep only to be woken up at 2:00 am by Happy Birthday being played overhead.

I know where I work, it isnt played in the patient's room. Its over the speakers in the hallways. And it isnt all that loud anyway. Often times its hard to hear from the pt's room.

I worked for a catholic hospital for years. When I left (I got married and I moved) I really missed the morning and evening prayers. It was more about comfort and tradition than religion. They played Brahms Lullaby....:)

i've never worked in a hospital that does this -- i'm rather anti-organized religion, so i'm glad. if people want to pray quietly to themselves, that's great. i don't think everyone in the building should be forced to listen to it, though.

well, if it comes down to it, i'd rather listen to inspirational versus barney-the-purple-dinasour's-version-of-i-love-you-you-love-me...'

i could ignore inspirational, but remain gagging at barney.

just as i'm sure that Green Day or Iron Maiden wouldn't be appreciated by some, but it;s often what's on in the car on the way into work ...

go the whole hog and play Queen's 'Another one Biutes the Dust' as the over head page for a Cardiac Arrest call ...
