I've seen soooo many posts on LTC facilities, most being not so great. And my personal exp. has been even worse. I was curious: Knowing what you know as a nurse/nursing student....Would you want to live in a nursing home if you could no longer care for yourself?
What other dying wishes do you have r/t your experience as a nurse/nursing student?
I do my fair share of smoking, drinking, and eating unhealthy foods in my spare time. I have one particular friend who is a total health nut, that teases me about digging myself an early grave....I usually say its better than having to let someone wipe my butt when i'm 100! Who wants to live that long?:chuckle .
Keep living like that and they'll be doing it at 50. LOL
Seriously. I don't want to end up in a nursing home. I'm not sure what my alternatives are going to be. I'd like to be as healthy and independent as long as I possibly can. No heroics and lots of sedation at the end.
I don't want to end up in a nursing home either. My most adamant thing is to not be trached though. I can't stand traches. Hate em. ANyone who traches me will have to deal with my very angry ghost once I do pass on. Consider yourselves warned....
You're absolutely right!!! I don't want a trach either.:angryfire When my Dad was in ICU they told me they might have to put a trach in my 86 year old father. I let them know "absolutely not," Why, my dad would have been furious if they had tried to do that.

ditto for me, but add feeding, peg tube to my "I will come back and haunt you list".:angryfire
I have never been a drug user but when I die ..LOAD ME UP.. I want it all
I don't want to die in a nursing home.I want to die in my own home with my cats in my bed with me. I don't want a breathing tube, G-tube or colostomy. I want to be able to sit down and enjoy a good meal. I want plenty of pain patches and morphine sl when I am dying.:)
I want hospice care in my home (ideally) and possibly a DNR order. I've watched two patients die under hospice care and they were very peaceful deaths. The nurses were excellent and knew just what to do throughout the process.
As for my corpse, I say...Let it burn! :flamesonb (My parents want to mourn me somewhere, but I think it'd be more romantic to scatter the ashes in the ocean or something.)

I can't make up my mind about burial or cremation....as i am deathly afraid of fire (but i'll be dead...i know what your thinking haha) but it STILL bothers me?!?!:rotfl:
First of all, I don't believe in euthanasia (sp?), but I do have "If you can read this you are too damn close" tattooed on my vocal cords.
I would like to be making love to a 19 year old cheer leader, when- due to extreme intoxication- I fall out of my tree stand being gored by a 30 point buck, just as my wife wins the Super-Mega Billions lottery.

The LTC attached to our hospital takes very good care of the residents and there is rarely any smell in the hallway.
However, I still would not want to end up having someone take care of my intimate needs. Is that selfish? If the only deficit I had was my physical inablility to care for myself, would it be selfish to make sure my death came soon and I deprived my family of my presence? I dunno . . . hard to think about.
You can sign my up for most of Commuter's ideas . . .. :)
