Your dying wishes?

Published

I've seen soooo many posts on LTC facilities, most being not so great. And my personal exp. has been even worse. I was curious: Knowing what you know as a nurse/nursing student....Would you want to live in a nursing home if you could no longer care for yourself?

What other dying wishes do you have r/t your experience as a nurse/nursing student?

First of all, I don't believe in euthanasia (sp?), but I do have "If you can read this you are too damn close" tattooed on my vocal cords.

I would like to be making love to a 19 year old cheer leader, when- due to extreme intoxication- I fall out of my tree stand being gored by a 30 point buck, just as my wife wins the Super-Mega Billions lottery.

...on particularly hectic shifts, I fantasize that I drop over dead at shift change so my co-workers will realize I REALLY NEEDED A BREAK!!! :chuckle

By the time you end up in a nursing home you won't realize you're in one.

patients may not be able to tell you whether they are in Happy Acres or McDonald's but they sure do know when they are in pain secondary to multiple decubiti from not being turned or left to lay in urine

just shoot me!

If I end up with a terminal illness I would love to have a heplock inserted and the doc write an order for Morphine 10-40mg titrate to breath free.(instead of pain free). My family, friends, coworkers, doctors and anybody else who happens to bring up the subject knows my views on feeding tubes.

They are fine if they will come out after pt recuperates from whatever illness caused the problem, other than that they are a form of torture IMHO and prolonging the inevitable.

No way on God's green earth would I EVER go to a LTC facility. I did my nurse aid classes there and got out of there ASAP. I won't allow my parents to go there when the time comes. There isn't enough help to give proper care to patients and most of the times it seems that no one cares. I have read posts from LTC nurses here and they seem like they do care about their patients so I'm not dissing every nurse nor every LTC facility. It's just my experience hasn't been good.

On the plus side, at the hospital where I work we have a continuing care center. It has approx. 15 beds but is private pay. No medicare. I would definitely go there or send my parents there. The nurses are so caring and with such a low census they have time to do the extra things that normally wouldn't be done. When I first came to the hospital and worked a few days there as part as orientation, I was surprised. It was nice. I had a chance to sit and talk to patients. We do their nails, hair and makeup. And most of all, it didn't have THAT smell.

There's a pt. there that is 107 years old. I love her. She's not in her right mind but sometimes she surprises you. I was feeding her supper one night and she said to me "I need a dime to pay the milkman." I didn't have a dime but I had a penny in my pocket. Thinking she wouldn't know the difference I gave it to her. She looked right at me and said "That's a penny. I said I needed a dime!" We all love her and dote on her. She's famous throughout the hospital.

I do need to make a living will/advance directive. I'm only 25 but that doesn't matter. I never know when I'll be in a serious car accident and I don't want to leave my parents with the decision whether to prolong life or not. BTW--is there a website out there where I can get the paperwork?

Kill me before we reach that point. . .or keep those McCheeseburgers coming.
