Feel free to add your own, thought this might be kinda fun. I feel so sorry when I see the looks on the oncoming nurses' faces when I give report and hand-off on patients and they realize what kind of day it's going to be.
I probably had one of those looks when I got report that I had one patient in a Posey Bed with a sitter who needed frequent PRN Ativan. The next patient was a total care on Ketogenic diet which means crushing lots and lots of bedtime meds and giving things like 0.67 tablet of this, and 0.35 tablet of that, and needing to watch carefully, do labs and replace electrolytes as needed. And then am told by charge nurse that my next patient is in the ED, they are waiting for another Posey bed and a sitter to become available before sending them up, and family will not be at bedside.
I survived the night, as always. But felt so sorry for oncoming nurse.
1- You walk into your pod and can see the crash cart, 2 vents, the dialysis machine and a commode behind various curtains. Also no nurse at the desk ready to hand over.
2- The outgoing nurse starts with "my apologies"
3- This patient is being assigned to you for "some extra TLC" and has complained to management about every single nurse so far
EXCELLENT thread everyone!I was just in PALS class with a group of ER and general peds nurses, and at the end of every scenario when the instructor said "And then what would you do?" They all pointed at me and said (in unison) "ship 'em to PICU!"
Same with any nursing education. What would you do? Call Rapid Response! No not always call Rapid response for everything. Seriously. I have been called to ask how to use the new feeding pumps. I have no idea, but you can check the trouble shooting guide on the side.
Whn an off-going shift member, sidles up to you and in a stage whisper says, "Run, Run away"!!!
When the off-going nurse states it was a great shift and I am sure yours will be too! (that's the kissof death to any shift).
I absolutely forbade my usband from saying, :Have a good night! as I left for work!! LOL he finally started saying, Have as good a night as possible!! LOL

Oh yes when you hear that they had a good shift and you will too is definitely the kiss of death. I say you just cursed me.

When you walk onto the unit and the crash cart is missing from it's usual spot...always, always a bad sign!
