Yes, I'm Vaxxed But...

I remember being taught in nursing school the rights of medication administration -

  1. Right patient
  2. Right medication
  3. Right dose
  4. Right route
  5. Right time
  6. Right documentation
  7. Right situation
  8. Right place
  9. RIGHT TO REFUSE.

I also remember my nursing instructor stressing how important number 9 is and that we as nurses have a duty to ensure that the right to refuse any medical care or medication is honored and upheld. To advocate for our patients and protect them. Protect them from what you may ask? To protect them from other medical professionals and “people” who think they can bully, manipulate, control and dominate any patient to force a medication, procedure or any type of medical care.

And wouldn’t you know that this RIGHT to refuse has been what I have had to defend more than anything? As an RN of more than a decade, I will forever support the right to choose and also the right to REFUSE any form of medical care. I can’t believe anyone feels that mandates of any form of medicine or medical practice or procedure is acceptable. Even more shocked that some nurses and NURSE LEADERS feel this is acceptable after a career of fighting for, defending and advocating for our patients rights.

Forced healthcare is NOT healthcare and I stand for the freedom this country was founded on. I have stood for my patients right  to choose. And now that nurses and other healthcare workers rights are being threatened, I stand for their right to choose as well. COERCION is not CONSENT.

When  arguments are weak and failing a common tactic on this forum is to challenge the credentials of the poster in an effort to launch personal attacks.

When arguments are weak and failing but repeated over and over again, it is common for educated professionals to wonder about the educational or professional experience of the individual offering up the weak and failing arguments. You perceive that as personal attack when it really is mystifying how one can simultaneously be educated and practice in health sciences and make ignorant comments about health sciences.

Who do I consider an anti-vaxxer?  1)  Those who value their own "personal freedoms" (vs. immunocompromised, medically fragile, some religions, etc.) vs. those that claim vaccines cause autism and "their cousins' friend in Trinidad.  3)  Would in the same sentence say that their own personal freedom to go on and infect their CHILDREN is more important than a woman's right to CHOOSE whether or not to have a CHILD.

Idaho is now on crisis standards.  Meaning care will only be provided to those that are "likely to survive".  There are no more beds in Idaho.  All the beds are filled with COVID patients.  So good luck having a stroke, or a heart attack or a trauma or asthma or (God bless us all) someone with a fall-related hip-fracture.

How far does an anti-vaxxer's rights go?  So others die because of their own selfishness.  Case closed.

I consider "antivax" as individuals that have emotionally decided against a vaccine and than have "researched" reasons to support that decision. The typical pattern presents with a slew of different reasons that have been picked up from other like minded people but are completely superficial, rely on logical fallacies and conspiracy theory, and are easily abandoned in place of a new reason if challenged.

I completely agree with you.  I have to wonder if your dynamic and quite academic explanation really applies to all of the 80 million unvaccinated US eligibles.  If all 80 million are as articulate as yourself, there would be no problem.  I'm simply putting forth my views with "boots on the ground" and death/fatality statistics vs. ivory tower.

And just to clarify, there are historical references to hundreds, if not thousands, of nations and civilizations that perished because of the foolishness of the few.  Will we never learn, Socrates?

The tone in this response is the example of the hostility that is disheartening.

I was also disappointed in the tone of this response to homeopathy on a message board ostensibly frequented by those who passed at least one class each in pharmacology, biology, and pathophysiology.

The tone is not derisive enough.

Do tell. What role does homeopathy have in treating/preventing people from getting ill with COVID and how does it compare to allopathic means like vaccination and/or medication in the hospital?

Are you saying this is the answer?

I took donwood1's response to mean we were too kind to advocates of homeopathy as a proven treatment, not that it's a proven treatment.

And while I find Malcom Gladwell's explanation of why homeopathy is surprisingly hard to disprove (although it is still disprovable), I don't find the basic premise without merit.

The basic premise is that you can effectively treat a disease with "like for like", using a weakened version of what causes a disease or illness.  That's exactly what vaccines are, which is why it's so odd that people who promote homeopathy are commonly also those who oppose vaccines.
