i was in the ICU during work last night and the nurse ans nurse extern were wearing these long fabric yellow gowns with stripes down the front of them (if that helps in telling me what they are) the patient wasnt isolation thought because i was not made to gown up before going in the room to take the patient to the floor. I was just wondering why they wore thoes and not just regular isolation gowns like the blue plastic type of gowns?
thanks everyone

the only isolation gowns I've ever seen in any of my clinicals were yellow. This doesn't help you a lot in your question, but I personally have never seen a blue isolation gown. Clearly the color alone isn't going to tell us much =(

Anytime I have ever seen those yellow gowns, they were for isolation patients.
I knew a few nurse aides that were very germaphobic and would wear a gown all the time..lol.
Sometimes they were worn when anticipating a messy procedure such as administering a tap water enema.
In general, it is the healthcare workers right to wear as much PPE as you personally want...
ok thanks guys. at our hospital usually we have the isolationthings hanging off the door and we use blue plastic throw away gowns but these girls were wearing these yellow fabric type i think they were just wearing them to be safe

Sounds like either the staff in the yellow gown was a germophobe or maybe the staff was covering up something on their scrubs?
I know I've had to cover myself up after getting something unpleasant on me and changing my clothes wasn't an option. I didn't think my pts wanted to see me come into their room to give care with another pt's stool on my pants.
Ew!
You don't see the cloth iso gowns very often anymore. You had to be very meticulous in how you removed them because they didn't get washed after every use.

i have seen the yellow fabric gowns... at my hospital, the nurses from endoscopy wear them. Sometimes a few gowns will wind up in the icu and stick around. Maybe these are the ones that you are seeing? Hope this helps, Ivanna
thank you very much. i really wasnt firmilar with these yellow gowns and im thinking it was either they were covering something up like blood because i think this women was bleeding a lot prior to me getting there or they were just being careful

I would just ask them next time you see them! Also, I would want to know what was going on in case of an emergency.

My hospital is "Going Green" by switching over to fabric gowns - these are yellow with stripes on them. So, that could be what's going on? Maybe she was, like you said, bleeding. Regarding the blue gowns, this sounds like the Dr was doing a bedside procedure (PICC insertion, for example) with the help of the nurses.

I've worn them for precautions at work before. Patients with MRSA and such.
Or those really messy ones after chili night.

They are old isolation gowns. Some wear them for protection of their uniforms, some are germaphobes, soem wear them to look "cool" and others are just plain cold......

those are the isolation gowns we use.. they are in that thing on the door when someones in isolation and when your done, the pt room usually has its own linen receptical the throw it in on your way out.. probably saves money over the paper gowns...
and i have worn them for a non contact patient before in instances when i felt like some kind of bodily fluid may splash on me.
