Awful textbook?
All ofhttp://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/0781793831 the "specialty" books (med-surg, psych, etc) are ebooks included in the bundle. Naturally they're all Pearson books. A friend sent me a med-surg text, but if anyone has suggestions for solid fundamentals of nursing texts let me know! This (http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/0781793831) looks promising and more of a beginning nursing book (the med-surg one I have is meant to build on fundamentals it seems). But more suggestions are welcome.

Awful textbook?
I'm half-tempted to ask the director of the program if she's read the Amazon reviews... We have a separate med/surg text, but I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for replacements for this atrocious series? It seems like a survey of nursing instead of focusing on just one specialty. Definitely buying these used if I can.

Awful textbook?
Just had orientation for my program and they announced we'll be using Pearson's Nursing: A Concept-Based Approach to Learning. They're excited about it and the way it's structured. Reading the Amazon reviews is pretty terrifying. I'm not a bad student, can self-teach very well, and can use non-required texts to supplement required ones. But has anyone used this particular text? It was mentioned that all of North Carolina has switched over to it and I'm really curious about it and awful textbook experiences in general. I kind of feel like a nursing career a textbook does not make but... yikes!

Which off line schools for the LPN in Wa. State
I suggest looking into local technical schools for LPN programs. Avoid "private" schools at all costs (pun intended). The program I'm on the waitlist for at Bellingham Tech is around $6000 after books and supplies.

Comfortable shoes for the ER
I have yet to try Vibrams because all I can picture is a toe being sliced off by an unnoticed Vanderlift wheel... but I'm definitely thinking about a pair for non-work uses. I have yet to find a white pair of Merrells or similar minimalist shoes for when I start nursing school next spring, but my search shall continue! Or I'll just spray paint some Vibrams. :)

Comfortable shoes for the ER
Merrell's Pace Glove. Extra "support" isn't how are feet were meant to be. Just let your feet do their evolutionary thing. Certainly helped my back injury when I switched to them.

Vent: "I should warn you, I'm a tough stick..."
My wife (a phlebotomist) always says, "There's no such thing as a tough stick, just a crappy sticker!"

Living with poo
On a smart-orificed note, I'd just like to take the opportunity to say that I hate, hate, hate the word "poo". BM, void, feces, waste... anything but "poo".

US RN to BSN program accepted in Alberta?
I've dug around a little and found a couple .pdf's that might be helpful, but don't answer my question in all it's specificity. http://www.alberta-canada.com/immigration/media/LPN_June_2010.pdf http://www.alberta-canada.com/immigration/medi/Registered_Nurse_June_2010_pdf.pdf

US RN to BSN program accepted in Alberta?
all righty, i posed this very same scenario to carna and they sent me back an e-mail stating: "we will not be able to assess your file until your application and required documents are in the office." obviously, this isn't very helpful for any planning i had in mind, because i am a us citizen and would like to eventually immigrate to alberta once i complete enough nursing education. i will be starting an lpn program that will take me 9 months to finish at a technical college. after working for 1000 hours, i am eligible to apply to the 9 month lpn to rn program through the same technical college. this awards an associates degree that will transfer to the university of washington. the uw has a rn to bsn program that takes from four to five quarters and i would be awarded a bsn just like any two-year bsn student. as far as i understand, this is not an "accelerated" program (much like the programs for those with a bachelor's in something else). i had figured obtaining my bsn in the us before immigrating to alberta would be more favorable and i wouldn't have to complete a two/three year bscn program up there (because as far as i know, a rn diploma is no longer accepted, but please correct me if i'm in error). to boil it down, i'd be taking a one year lpn program, a one year lpn to rn program, then a one year rn to bsn program, all through legitimate institutions. since carna wasn't very helpful, does anyone know if this would be acceptable to the province or do they need to specifically review my competency. also, what do iens in alberta/canada think about immigrating with an adn instead of a bsn? have you been able to work as an rn or were you able to work as an lpn? would getting my bscn in canada benefit me more than getting mine in the us, in terms of canadian experience? i combed as many threads as i could before posting, but if i missed any that anyone thinks might be helpful, let me know. thanks!

Is anyone else annoyed by the expectations of male nurses in transferring patients?
Don't hospitals have care plans posted just like LTCs do? If my nurse and I ever got caught transferring a patient contrary to care plan, we'd be in it up to our eyeballs. Think of the lawsuit potential if that 300 lb. dementia patient had fallen during that improper transfer. Makes my back hurt just thinking about it.

Shhhh! ---It's all a crock!
Ever seems a bit silly. I can understand the need for maintaining quiet when as convenient as possible, though. If someone's in the hospital, they need all the rest they can get and a quiet environment contributes to that. But whispering a code? Seems there might have been a miscommunication there.

insulin for non diabetics to prevent diabetes.. and aging? WHAT?
There's a reason my pharmacology instructor told me that the absolutely most dangerous drug I would encounter as a nurse is insulin. What a crazy individual.
