There didn't seem to be a main thread for applicants to Yale's GEPN program this year, so I thought I'd get one started. I'm applying for the midwifery specialty and am currently working on my application essays, having done everything else.
Is anyone else really struggling with the main essay? I've finished my apps to two other programs and was happy with how those essays came out, but Yale's essay guidelines as so restrictive that I feel like my essay is turning out all disjointed. The fact that we have to answer every aspect of every question in *exactly the order they list* (this is apparently something that you need to take very seriously) means that I'm having to tie myself in knots. I want it to be not only informative about me as an applicant but also a good piece of writing - and I feel like the essay format is making this kind of difficult.
Anyone else out there applying?
I indicated that I would like to stay with a current student, as they mentioned was possible in the interview notification email. I haven't yet gotten confirmation that this is actually happening (but I have a friend to stay with in New Haven otherwise). I'm getting there the night before and leaving just before the full day ends, so I won't even be there 24 hours!
Hi everyone,
I have an interview on the 26th, and I'm staying at the Study at Yale with my girlfriend. We will be there for one night only.
I'm sad that this forum lost so many valuable messages, particularly the one in mid-December about acceptance rates for interviewees. Anyone remember who posted that?
I'm very excited, but also incredibly nervous. Time to start spelunking in past years for some interview tips, I guess. Good luck to everyone! For future applicants, I received my email at 11:46 am for the Oncology program.
Hi everyone-- I've been following this thread for a while but just decided to share my crazy story!
I didn't receive an email invitation to interview in December and was disappointed as I thought I was a competitive applicant.
This morning, my phone rings and it is SE asking if I will be attending the interview on January 27th? Shocked and confused, I told her I never received an email. It turns out they entered my address incorrectly!!!
I will be interviewing on Jan 27th for the midwifery specialty and could not be more thrilled! Anyone know acceptance statistics for the midwifery specialty or acceptance rates for those that were offered interviews from previous years? So excited and can't wait to meet some of you in January!
cblack37 - holy cow! what a great story. your brain must have been doing cartwheels! i def. would have needed to sit down. congratulations. really exciting. - and you were competitive after all!
in regards to accept. rates - i know some specialties are larger than others...which would mean they are harder to get into i would think. midwifery and family are the ones that appear largest.
oncology and acute care appear to be the smallest groups.
chula - you're correct in remembering that someone posted the rates a while back. i'd REALLY be interested in seeing them again too!
i've decided to not wear a suit for interview day. i'm going with black wool pants and a funky top of some sort. anyone have thoughts on the suits?! i certainly don't want to be underdressed...but would kick myself for going out and buying a suit if it's not needed!
My interview is on the 19th- so soon! I plan on wearing a suit with a sweater, so if it's not "suit-y" I can just take off the jacket, but if it is I'm all set. I got it for $60 at a nice second hand store, not bad! It's worth it to find something you feel confident and comfortable in I think.I'm staying downtown, will anyone else be around? Getting there from Austin Texas requires three flights (ugh) so i will be there for a few days, and I'd love to meet up!
I'm local-ish. so if you'd like to do dinner or coffee, etc. let me know! would love to hang out - not many people can relate to this journey besides for this little group!great idea on the sweater with a coat in case! I'm a thrift store/tag sale girl all the way. excited to get my outfit together.just about 10 days to go! I'm already dreading the long wait until march for final decisions. from what I can tell from past years posts - it will likely be the first week of march. ahhhhh!!!
laflaca, in answer to your previous question about travel: My interview is on January 19th, and I will be in New Haven from the 17th to the 21st.
CBlack37, congratulations on your interview! That is a crazy story. I have searched previous threads for midwifery admissions statistics, and apparently the school interviewed 46 people for 13 spots in 2011. I am not sure what the yield rate is, or how many people are ultimately accepted from the waiting list. Does anyone else have more information?
sirgalahad, I am staying downtown, as well, and would love to meet up. I have a list of pizza parlors that I am excited about trying out, so that's always a possibility.
simplekategirl, I will probably be dressed like you, in gray trousers and some sort of sweater or top. Ideally, I would go out and buy myself a suit, but the interview trip itself is a major financial sacrifice for me, so I am going to try to make due with what I currently have in my closet. Past threads indicate that, although there will be many applicants in suits, others wear business casual. Here, for example, is a comment from a 2011 applicant:
And here is another one from the 2010 thread:

simplekategirl, that's a good idea. Here's my contribution: I received an interview invitation for CNM early in the 9:00 hour (EST) on Friday, December 16th. I was expecting to be in suspense all day, so it was a relief to see everything going out so early. If I remember correctly, other applicants received their invitations even earlier than I did, in the 8:00 hour. I believe that the bulk of the invitations, if not all, were sent out by lunchtime.
