There didn't seem to be a main thread for applicants to Yale's GEPN program this year, so I thought I'd get one started. I'm applying for the midwifery specialty and am currently working on my application essays, having done everything else.
Is anyone else really struggling with the main essay? I've finished my apps to two other programs and was happy with how those essays came out, but Yale's essay guidelines as so restrictive that I feel like my essay is turning out all disjointed. The fact that we have to answer every aspect of every question in *exactly the order they list* (this is apparently something that you need to take very seriously) means that I'm having to tie myself in knots. I want it to be not only informative about me as an applicant but also a good piece of writing - and I feel like the essay format is making this kind of difficult.
Anyone else out there applying?
Hi,So I can only speak to midwifery - but there were 12 matriculants for 46 interviewees last year. I'm not sure how many they accept over that 12 though, but I would guess a couple. I also know there was a wait list and know some people got in off it. In regards to size of specialty - I only know my GEPN class. Roughly, there were 4 each in oncology and acute care, 12 midwifery, 10 womens, 17 family, about 12 peds, about 14 psych, about 7 adult (which isn't running this year as you know), and our total class size is a bit over 80. These numbers and the breakdown changes every year. You interview with only one person. Not sure though whether it'll be the person on your form or not, but I'm guessing yes.Good luck!
Good luck to everyone with interviews today and tomorrow! Don't worry about being nervous, because I'm sure they're used to most candidates being halfway crazy by the time they get into the interview room. Everyone on this board seems really well-prepared and that will shine through, despite any jitters. Can't wait for my turn next week :)
I have a question for those of you who live in NYC or New Haven; how feasible is it to take the train from Manhattan up to New Haven the morning of my interview and arrive in time for check in at 8:30? Clearly, according to Metro-North, I will arrive with plenty of time, but - is this true in reality? Amtrak out here is regularly hours off schedule. I'm flying in from Seattle on Wednesday afternoon, and have family to stay with in NYC, I'd rather not pitch for a hotel if can possibly help it. Any pearls of wisdom for me on the trustworthiness of Metro-North?
Hi Clovette,
I live in Fairfield, CT and am familiar with the city and New Haven. The MNR is generally very true to schedule, so if you know you can get to Grand Central by a certain time to arrive by 8 you should be good. The New Haven station is within walking distance of YSN, and there are usually plenty of cabs.
Hope this helps! Are you interviewing next Thurs of Fri?
thought I'd post a fact we learned at interview day on the 19th. they HOPE to have decisions mailed out no later than 3/1/2012. could be before but not likely. we will be notified by email either way as well as a follow up in the mail. they are still trying to figure out how to put sensitive financial aide info into the emails so folks would get all that info at the time of acceptance. as of right now they haven't figured that out. a potential barrier to their email plan...so we should be ready or anything (much like past years!). in the end they might skip emails all together or something like that. 3/1 seems so far away!
March? Oh goodness. I was hoping for news sooner than that...actually got an acceptance from another program already though, so hopefully I'll be (slightly) less crazy during the Yale interview. And getting an email will keep me from losing my mind if I'm out of town or something that week! Thanks for keeping us posted.
