Yale GEPN Applicants 2012

Published

There didn't seem to be a main thread for applicants to Yale's GEPN program this year, so I thought I'd get one started. I'm applying for the midwifery specialty and am currently working on my application essays, having done everything else.

Is anyone else really struggling with the main essay? I've finished my apps to two other programs and was happy with how those essays came out, but Yale's essay guidelines as so restrictive that I feel like my essay is turning out all disjointed. The fact that we have to answer every aspect of every question in *exactly the order they list* (this is apparently something that you need to take very seriously) means that I'm having to tie myself in knots. I want it to be not only informative about me as an applicant but also a good piece of writing - and I feel like the essay format is making this kind of difficult.

Anyone else out there applying?

Thurs for FNP here...

I'm interviewing for midwifery as well. A friend of mine interviewed yesterday for midwifery and she said they are interviewing 50 people for 15 spaces. I remember reading somewhere (so take that statistic with a serious grain of salt, because I can't find the source) that they only have a 55% to 60% retention rate. That gives us MW students about a 42% chance of acceptance in the end. Obsessing about statistics is one of my coping mechanisms these days, apparently. That and trying to decide what to wear.

statistics and obsessing about clothes...my coping mechanisms exactly :) Numbers are hard to come by in this case, so mostly I am debating about necklace options.

Hey everyone. Interview day was fantastic. All the interviewees were super nice, as were students and faculty. Any nervousness was gone about 5 minutes into Linda P's opening remarks, and the rest of the day was great. FYI just about every woman wore a black suit, and 3 guys wore ties and one (me) didn't. Relax, enjoy it, it was a great experience!

I'm acute care. hope your interview went well!

Oh great! Now we're back to the whole - "should I wear a suit" question. We don't "do" suits in Seattle. I work for a world renowned cancer research center here and I go to work in jeans and ironic granny sweaters everyday. And here I was laflaca thinking I was nearly done with the obsessing about what to wear phase...

I wore my own version of a suit! rusty brown colored fine wale vintage blazer from a thrift shop, my vintage brown leather frye boots and a pair of j crew tab suit pants I got at good will - I wore a fitted black tank top under blazer. I felt totally comfortable and not underdressed at all. wear what represents you best - by no means was EVERYONE in a suit. everyone looked night but lots of color and different styles! it's a very relaxed group there!

that's funny Clovette....I am wearing a suit, only because I once bought a suit in a desperate attempt to feel like a professional. Have never once needed a suit at work. Wore it once to a funeral, once to a job interview (painfully overdressed), and now finally, gloriously have a legitimate suit occasion. By now it's probably completely out of style, of course.

Bonus: I have been wearing it around the house occasionally, to freak out my husband. Ay, who let this banker in the house? :)

@Simplekategirl...your "suit" sounds perfect!

Thanks guys - I feel better. I'm off to find something to cover my upper half with.

the thrifty chic in me will be curious as to what your final decision is on clothing!! I need a long term distraction! I knew a few months ago that this waiting would be awful for my psyche so I decided to train for a 1/2 marathon. loving it - though it's not proving to take all my mental energy since I still have plenty of time to obsess over Yale! mostly...while I'm running. what gives?!

Ooooooo, simplekategirl, you're a runner? We need to start a GEPN 2012 running group....we can run and obsess about our classes together, after we get accepted (which of course we will). I am old and slowish, but determined, and 10-milers and half-marathons are my favorite distances.

I was just online yesterday trying to find a New Haven running group that I could join during my visit - I love to meet up with running groups while traveling, you meet the coolest people - but had no luck. I suppose that running is not the most popular activity in Connecticut in January? I just ran a 25K here in Austin last weekend in shorts and a tank top, but maybe I should pack the thermal pants for the Yale visit :)
