Write-Ups & Disciplinary Action

Has anyone ever been written-up or suspended by their place of employment?

I received my first write-up today after nine months on the job. I am the type of person who can accept full responsibility for my wrongdoings; however, the disciplinary process is still so very depressing and humorless.

Thanks for listening.

I had never heard of it until I came to this site. We do not have this "punishment" culture in the Australian system, at least not that I'm aware of. We do incident reports for med errors etc, and you meet with the NUM to discuss it, but I don't know anyone who got "written up" or suspended.

I do know how it feels to make a mistake, as most of us do, and you're harder on yourself than others could be. Best wishes to you.

Oh , if I wasnt so decrepit I would seriously think of moving to Australia!;)

Sorry to hear this happened. I always tried to resolve disciplinary problems orally in face to face discussions before ever resulting to putting something on paper. Once the write-up has been done, the best thing you can do is to sign it and comply with what you are asked to do to remedy the situation. It looks better for you in the long run because these papers get placed in your permanent personnel file at the facility. 10 years from now if anyone takes a look at them, they will see that you owned up to the error and were cooperative and compliant about correcting your behavior. To do anything different will only brand you as a difficult, problem employee. If other similar write-ups follow, then a trend is established and you can pretty much flush any hope of advancement or transfer to other units down the crapper at that point.

As I previously stated, I am the type of person who accepts full responsibility for my wrongdoings.

I am too shaky right now to discuss what I did to deserve the write-up, but it absolutely did not involve patient care or harming patients. One of my offenses was using the internet after my shift ended, since only family members and patients are to use our so-called 'Internet Cafe'.

My bosses did say that they did not want to see me leave the comapny over offenses that were so silly.

I'm sorry to hear that this happened to you and I hope things turn out all right, Commuter.

By no means is this a problem unique to LTC. When it comes to work, we probably have no friends at all. Not really. When it comes to life in general, our mothers are probably our only friends. LOL No, I don't really mean that but it is probably a good idea to trust absolutely no one, especially at work.

I am not a nurse yet, but in my past corporate experience, I found that CEOs and top managers who described the company environment as "we are all family here" were also the first to manipulate, be unsupportive, and unceremoniously lay people off like they were taking out the trash at the end of the week.

On the other hand, managers who would term our relationships more like "we're professional colleagues" were more proactive in supporting their employees' professional growth, and were also more understanding when employees needed time to take care of personal crises at home. I found them to be more supportive in general.

Meloney you have zeroed in. Perfect comment. Welcome to the "family" here and we aren't THAT kind of family....

I got written up a short time ago. Still peeves me off. I followed P & P, but should have also known to do some other stuff. ????? what gives? I assessed the situation correctly and followed what I needed to do. End of story. And I loved the line "furthur disciplinary may result in ". That's it. They didn't even finish the sentence. I'm sure "Termination" should have followed, but it didn't.

hi commuter i know what you mean ok ive been fired four times in the rolled

im also willingly to admit my mistake and my wrong doing but as for the last three jobs before that. its like dam if i do, dam if i don't do anything wrong it just happens. people being bully at work you could never prove it. plus i have been turn into the state had my cna pulled. but the state wants a list of all the places i have worked at. i wouldn't do it because when i try to prove that im being bully the state couldn't help me, plus i don't trust anyone what soever.

i think a write-up much depends on the way it was given.

there are mgrs who who will give one a write-up as if it's a counselling session, an educational session, if you will.

then there are those who are are deceptive, miserable beings are who truly out to get you, just to create a paper trail.

and finally, there are those where the violation was so black and white, that the write-up is warranted, one signs it, reflects, learns and moves on.

i know too well, how it feels.

but i never had a write up until almost 7 yrs of employment.

after i was out of there, i didn't realize how battered i was.

commuter, if the violation is something you agree with, you will only grow as a nurse.

and we all know how growing pains feel.

plus, you've been through alot of stress lately.

it's time to plan in spoiling yourself, a little r&r.

with peace,

leslie

I see from your post that you are counting down to the end of this semester, and it's only a little over two weeks away. I suggest that you take a deep breath and concentrate on something good right now. Yes, I am an eternal optimist, but please don't let this situation (whatever it might be) escalate into something that will get GroupOne treatment.

Your many posts have demonstrated that you are indeed a conscientious nurse when it comes to caring for your patients. Best wishes!

I HAVE to agree with this. I have been reading your posts for some time, and am HIGHLY impressed with you. You are an advocate, conscientious as Retired RN stated and wise. I always receive inspiration from reading your posts. I do believe that it is a silly reason, something they could have spoken to you about, and would be pissed, too. There are many horrible nurses out there, and am sure that there are quite a few sour apples in your places of employment. But, the write up does not represent YOU. I don't mean to trivialize this, but just don't do it again, and move on. Do you think that it was one of the gossipy people (I read your response to another post) that was just trying to be petty? That happens all the time as well.

My goodness! Is that all you did! Keep your chin up. No one likes to be written up. I have been written up for something that did not pertain to me, however since I was the nurse manager, got it anyway.

You hit the nail directly on the head. The 2 coworkers who told on me are the facility gossips.

I can readily admit that my actions went against company policy, but I don't think they warranted a punishment as austere as a final written warning before I'm terminated. After all, my personnel file was completely clean prior to this final written warning, with no previous write-ups or disciplinary action of any sort.
