NO, I should have worded it "Why or why not?" I am a student nurse and I have read older nursing text my husbands grandmother gave me from when she was an LVN...I know things have changed and I just wanted to see how people felt, if they were like "no way were are both in this healthcare buisness together", or "Doctors should be respected, they are higher up than us" or if there are stories of doctors that expect them to move (I know they are still out there, I work for them in a clinic!...We have limited work area's. I was sitting at a doctor's desk once (it was his day off) I had charts everywhere and I was on the phone calling a Rx in for another doctor. He came in, looked at me and made that throat clearing noise like 'your in my seat' and just stared at me. I got up (still on the phone) and grabbed the chart I was using. He sat down and proceeded to surf the internet!:trout: :trout: :angryfire :trout: )

Our docs round about the time of med pass so we aren't in the nurse's station anyway. Most of the docs stand at the counter but a couple sit. Not in front of the computer - we only do meds in our computer. There is one seat out of 4 in the station that these two docs choose to sit. I would get up. They are only there for about 15 minutes, mostly in patient's rooms.

Common courtesy and politeness are key.

What Tweety and Steph said. Nobody needs to make a statement by deliberately not giving up a seat to a doctor (or anyone else) who needs it. If I were truly busy doing important work at that seat, I would continue my work until finished or at a point were I can take a break, and then offer it to anyone needing it. Otherwise, if there is something else I can be/need to be doing I will get up and do it,surrending the seat to anyone else needing that spot. No need to make a big production out the situation.

I'd get up and give my seat to anyone who needed it more than me, whether that's a fellow nurse, a tech, an NP or an MD. If I need to be sitting wherever I'm sitting though, I'm not going to give up my seat JUST because there's a doctor looking for one. But I don't work with doctors who expect that, either.

:yeahthat:

Dare I say Golden Rule, simple manners, random acts of kindness. If I truly need it I keep it, if not I relinquish it with no fuss or fury. Have a great day.

Seats are a rare commodity! Mine mine mine! It depends. If I'm going to be stuck there for a while, it's mine. Otherwise, priority on who gets seats is based on who looks the most fatigued, how log the person is going to be there, etc.

I also can't stand when I leave my seat for just a second (like to get another order sheet when I'm writing orders and need another page) and I turn around and someone (doc or not) has stolen my seat, dumping their stuff RIGHT ON TOP of mine (like the open chart and half-done orders aren't a CLUE here?

I'll mosey on over and very deliberately (and not conveniently) remove my stuff from under theirs with a very sweet comment, such as "oh! I'm so sorry my stuff was in the way for you. I was just running to get the next page for the orders I was writing. No, no it's ok, I'll go find somewhere else to sit." .

This rarely happens though, where I work. More likely, if someone snags the chair I was in to grab a phone call (usually a doc), he's half getting out of it to give it back as I approach. They tend to be very good about respecting our work.

To answer the question, if I don't need the seat, or I can easily change seats to accomodate someone who needs the 'puter I'm not using but in front of, of course I'll move. Common courtesy. Goes for docs or anyone else.

LOL my nurses station is so small, we're actually used to hanging over each other to answer phones, run tele strips or whatever. I guess you could say we're "close".

if i am just sitting there and not doing anything...which is never and he was actually gonna do some work then yeah i might..only if has been nice and respectful to me in the past...otherwise he can stand there until his skin rots off...

Specializes in Clinic, formerly ED, ICU, PACU, ortho.

I have not seen this happen since 1986. Also, I do not believe there are any docs out there that would accept this or be pleased about it.

Specializes in gastroentestinal and vascular surgery.

thats a tough one, its depends on the situation of course and nine times out of ten where i work they wouldn't and don't stand up for us nurses!
