Would an online A&P course affect admission?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hey guys!

I am currently a pre-nursing student looking to begin the BSN program in Fall 2015. I am from Georgia so I am going to apply to GRU, Kennesaw, Southern, Emory, and probably a few more just to help my chances of getting accepted. I changed my major sort of late in the game so I am in the process of getting as many science pre-reqs in as possible so that I will be able to apply. I will be taking Microbiology in the fall so I thought maybe it would be a good idea to take A&P online to ease my schedule a little. However, I am concerned that the fact that it's online could affect my chances of getting accepted.

Does anyone have any experience or advice for this? Did you take A&P online and still get accepted?

I think a majority of nursing programs won't accept those credits. Usually, the A&P has a lab portion that you must do which is not a part of an online course. This is why they usually don't accept the credit. However, you should ask the individual schools that you're applying to whether or not they will accept the course or not - you never know! You also don't want to take a class and find out that it didn't count for anything and will have to retake it.

I took A&P 2 online, but went in for the lab. Is yours something like that? It was tough, but totally doable. I went in for exams, but everything else was strictly self teaching. I got most of everything I needed out of my lab time. Lots of weekend hours spent looking at plastic models innards lol

I'd check with each school you're considering. Of the two I applied to, one said I must have in-person lab, and the other said online lab was fine.

Good day, tayhaynes:

1. Is the online class from a nationally accredited college?

2. How was the lab component handled?

Normally, the transcripts will not indicate if the class was online. The main question would be lab or not as lab is typically required for it to be counted towards a prerequisite, and whether or not the school was/is nationally accredited.

Thank you.

I took A&P I and II with labs online from a local community college... had no issues transferring those credits and as pmabraham stated my transcript does not indicate in any way that those credits were taken online. :)

Online lab is usually not acceptable and few credible colleges would offer online lab anyway. Lecture online is fine I think, but some schools will not allow any science courses online, period. It's true that schools do not indicate on transcripts whether a course is taken online, but if you live in MA and your transcript is from a school in CA, it's obviously taken online. If you take it from a local fully-accredited school, one really can't tell whether it's taken online.

I would definitely check with the schools. I took online micro and have had no issues, but I'm in a different state. I would also suggest not taking micro and A&P at the same time because they are both very hard courses.

The only way to know is to check with the school and see if they accept online credits with lab. Many schools are having a problem getting their online sciences accredited. My personal opinion is some classes are ok to take online, but the hard core sciences should really be taken in person. Especially A&P because it is the foundation for nursing.

My school allows online, but you must be on campus for lab.

There is a lab portion but it is done at home. The teacher explained to me that some specimens will be mailed to us for us to dissect. Hopefully that will be okay compared to going to campus for the lab!

1. Yes it is nationally accredited

2. There lab portion is performed at home. I know the professor mentioned we would receive a few things to dissect in the mail..that's about all he said.
