Would you get treated at the hospital where you work?

Published

So, I know a couple of well established people at their job site who when they got hurt there, did not want to be treated there... Here's the story:

A NP at a big HHC hospital in New York was working on the floor actively seeing patients when she collapsed. She appeared to be having a MI and inbetween gripping her chest and gasping, staff was putting her on a stretcher. Now, she's worked there for 16 years and so everyone rushed to help. Another RN said "Ms Y. we'll take you to the ER downstairs, and you'll be okay." To which she replied "Noo, I don't want to go here! Transfer me to another NYC hospital!". I was shocked, it wasn't the first time I herd this, but amidst her MI she had the guts to ask for a blood thinner and an ambulance to be transferred! She was fine, and did get transferred, but it just got me thinking. Would you work somewhere that you wouldn't be treated? Anyone else see this?

I would definatly get care at the hospital I work at. I've actually ended up in the ER a couple of times. It was a bit awkward, but it is the hospital my doc is at and I do know and trust the staff.

LOL, at some of the replies. Nerdtonurse? I shared your post with my mother and we just laughed. I completly understand the reasons some would not want to be treated at their hospitals. But would you vocalize it like she did?

I would gladly be admitted to my hospital. I work in a pediatric facility, however, I am technically young enough by their standards that if anything ever happened to me at work, that I am still young enough to be admitted there. If they would allow it, I would prefer to be treated in peds that adult medicine. Peds seesms safer, smaller patient ratios, etc.

No, I wouldn't be treated there(at least I hope not); it's a mental hospital !

No. And my family knows that if I ever need to go to the hospital to drive 20 minutes the other way to the rival hospital. I don't trust any of the surgeons and many of the nurses.

yes and have been treated very well on a couple of occasions

Nope. I wouldn't be comfortable with my coworkers caring for me, much less everyone having access to my information.

I've taken care of several coworkers and yeah, you have to be professional because it's just part of the job. I'd be lying though if I didn't admit to feeling a bit uncomfy with giving an enema or putting in a foley on someone I work with. And once you've seen your supervisor naked...I dunno, you just can't unsee that!

My hospital is the only game in town, and for 50 miles so I don't have a lot of choice. But I have had 2 babies & surgery here, as well as having family treated here, and very well for the most part.

However, I would not let a family member go to our ED unattended. They have some serious staffing issues and I'm afraid something could be missed, or a serious med error might be made. :(

Only if I had to. I really value my privacy and that of my family.

I've thought about this, actually. My hospital has the only BMTU is a fair amount of distance. God forbid I ever needed a BMT, would I have it at my hospital, on the unit I work on? Or travel some place several hours away (and constantly be comparing the care to the care I'd get at my own hospital). Even if one of my family members needed a BMT, it'd be awkward working on the unit they were hospitalised on. My hospital really only does cancer, so I hope I never need to be treated there. As long as I wasn't on the unit I worked on, I think I'd be okay with it, though.

This may come out of left field, but if I were to have an addiction of some sort (and nurses never do, right?) and I felt it would be discovered at my place of employment, then I would definitely try to get transferred to a facility where I was less well known. Same thing if I had a medical condition I didn't want spread around, but could be a factor in my care, say I was asymptomatic HIV+ and now I was having some sort of complication. So, if I had any secrets...

I would TOTALLY be treated where i work. ESP on the floor that i work.

Not even something that would cross my mind. I work in 40 min from where i work, the town i live in- i live like 4 blocks from the hospital, i wouldnt be caught dead there, i would make them transfer me to the one i work at for sure.
