Worried about my nursing supplies!?

Published

Here is the deal I start my 1st semester of nursing school Monday woohoo!! I am already super nervous but yet very excited! My 1st semester I have the usual health assessment, communication for health professionals, fundamentals, etc. Anyways........ I have talked to a few of my fellow classmates and everyone went out and got a stethoscope at walmart, BP stuff at walmart, etc. I have NOTHING against this I have been truly blessed to have such a wonderful fiance' and have saved money back myself as well I have a littman cardio III stethoscope, and a Welch Allyn tycos sphygmomanometer I am very lucky to have these and my fiance' and myself bought these as sort of an investment as we expect these to last a long time for me provided they don't get stolen! Plus the BP thing was bought used from a med student I know and it was simply a good deal. My issue is my classmates have kind of made me feel like I have a snotty attitude about these as they asked me what type of supplies I have so I named those two items off to them ( I wasn't like OMG! I have this this and this only top of the line stuff you know) I just stated I have a littman stethoscope and a Welch Allyn BP since they asked. Well now no one really likes me that much and have been saying stuff like "the snotty rich kid", etc. I am in no way shape or form a rich kid! I don't consider myself snotty either and neither do my friends outside of school. I just think I am truly lucky and blessed to start school with nice things. Should I leave the nice stuff at the house now that we already spent money on it or just take it to school and be lucky I have such things? I hate everyone already hates me! This is not what I was expecting! What should I do? 3/4 of me says just ignore them, but the 1/4 of me says are my instructors going to hate me because I have nice things?

Get your Littman monogrammed, as it has been shown you will be stuck with some very petty people. Ignore those who begrudge you having a nice instrument. They too will be able to have one in the future if they are successful in NS, so it shouldn't ruin their entire lives if you have one now and they don't. This kind of attitude will though :lol2:

Your instructors are most likely to dislike you if you are petty, immature, unprepared, arrogant...you get the picture. We were encouraged to buy a good stethoscope - except by one instructor who swears by the disposable ones for isolation rooms lol.

On the other hand, I guess I don't have to worry about having a crummy car if my Littman is such a status symbol ;D

Do not let people like that get to you! I have had smart remarks made to me about "how easy I have it" and that "I'm taken care of" since my husband has a good job and I do not have to work while I'm in school. It hurt my feelings at first but then I just moved on. I have two boy also so I consider myself lucky that I do not have to throw a job into the insanity of kids & school!

And I've already decided that I'm going to invest the money into the good stuff just like you did! Lol It just makes more sense to me especially after talking with current students and recent grads.

Focus on what you're there to learn and do not let the petty things get to you!! Good luck in your studies!!

Screw them. Are they crazy. I went through something similar like you did. When I was in school to be a Medical Assistant. I stated that I was going to buy me a new car when I recieved my tax return. When the time came I bought me a brand new car. Mind you I had never owned a car before and took the bus everywhere. Everyone knew I was going to buy a new car. Anywho a group of MA students would walk in front of my car and stop like they wanted me to hit them. "Seriously" Then one day I went to one of my former teachers class to ask her a question. Next thing I new I was being called to the adminstration office saying I walked in the class and was rude to the students. Let me tell you these girls had it out for me. I almost got kicked out of school over some jealous, childish, games these idotic girls were playing and the school adminstration belived them. I made it and graduated, and when I left a couple of them were kicked out.

If I were you I would use your equipment screw them. I plan on buying my own stuff too if my kit has some crappy looking cheap equipment. If they still look at you cross eyed just smile and turn your head.

I bet you will make good friends in class. It's only the first week. Besides with that attitude they may not last long.

God Bless you hun and you will do good in the program.

Get your stethoscope ENGRAVED, even if you have to pay some money to have it done at a jeweler's. And you can use white typing correction fluid to put your name on the cuff, and have the dial engraved too.

Note: for full impact of this message, it should display in Comic Sans, green. Thank you.

Maybe a little Jealousy is the problem there, however you will need friends in this program so If I were you I would be a lil extra nice and maybe try to talk to others, maybe you are just assuming ... And if you hear someone referring to you as that.. Simply Turn and tell them you were Lucky to have these things and you got them for a killer Deal, and If it wasn't for the good deal you wouldn't have them.. Alot of how people feel towards someone is all in how they perceive you, sound like your putting yourself in the corner a lil.

Consider that maybe no one except you cares about the name brand stuff that you have. IF everyone hates you -- and I have no idea whether they do or not -- it has nothing to do with them being jealous over your stuff and more to do with your attitude. If YOU are overly impressed with your stuff -- and it sounds as if that may be the case -- they could interpret that as a "snotty attitude." Your instructors aren't going to hate you because you have nice things . . . but there again, an attitude may make you less than the favorite student.

I agree that you need friends in nursing school. Once it gets hectic in there, no one will care.....unless of course they bought the cheap ones lol. I bought a cheap one when I started school. It came with all these extra bells and earpeices and I thought that was just wonderful. One day I picked it up and the earpeices were missing .....good thing I had extras, huh. The next thing I knew, the bell kept falling off. To make a long story short, I have a Littmann.

This will be the VERY LEAST of you or your classmates' concerns once y'all start school.

Anyone who has the time to even care about another classmate's stuff once y'all are in the thick of things doesn't have their mind on the right stuff and likely won't be long for that school.

Don't worry about them go ahead and use them. I'm not sure about your school but mine basiclly said that you needed to get a Littmann for labs and clinicals just because the ones you get at Walmart are so cheap. You may find once you get there that the instructors will want everryone else to get better stethascopes.

as previous posters said, ignore them. when using your supplies dont be showy about it and just do what you need to do

most of my classmates had littmans. I had one too. was I jealous b/c s/o else had a cardio 3 or master classic? no. I was happy for them they could afford it/got as a gift from well meaning friends. My littman was good for me and their was good for them. the tables may change in a few months when your classmates realize YOU were the lucky one when you could hear what you needed and they now need to go get a better stethoscope. my friend got a 'scope from her school (don't remember the name but comparable to littman. Her dad went and got her a littman because he (a Dr) said they are best. You're one of the lucky ones and be happy you have what you have. ignore the small minded people. also, I don't think your prof's really care what type of steth you have as long as you have one. they may notice its a fancy one but I dont think they will judge you harshly for that.

just my :twocents:

I got a Cardio III for nursing school and never regretted it and still have it. The great thing about it is it has a heavy metal head and if you swing it just right....

The way I see it do you really want to be friends who make snap judgements about you based on a stethescope? Though having said that not being a pariah is good too.

In nursing school, I found out that you really only need one or two friends to get through. Surely you can find a couple of people who couldn't care less about that stuff. I only have a Littmann because my husband bought it for me as well. I know they are a good quality, but I personally wouldn't have spent the money on it.

If you don't act as though you're superior to them, what difference does it make how they perceive you? Just do your thing, and forget about the haters.
