Worried about my nursing supplies!?

Here is the deal I start my 1st semester of nursing school Monday woohoo!! I am already super nervous but yet very excited! My 1st semester I have the usual health assessment, communication for health professionals, fundamentals, etc. Anyways........ I have talked to a few of my fellow classmates and everyone went out and got a stethoscope at walmart, BP stuff at walmart, etc. I have NOTHING against this I have been truly blessed to have such a wonderful fiance' and have saved money back myself as well I have a littman cardio III stethoscope, and a Welch Allyn tycos sphygmomanometer I am very lucky to have these and my fiance' and myself bought these as sort of an investment as we expect these to last a long time for me provided they don't get stolen! Plus the BP thing was bought used from a med student I know and it was simply a good deal. My issue is my classmates have kind of made me feel like I have a snotty attitude about these as they asked me what type of supplies I have so I named those two items off to them ( I wasn't like OMG! I have this this and this only top of the line stuff you know) I just stated I have a littman stethoscope and a Welch Allyn BP since they asked. Well now no one really likes me that much and have been saying stuff like "the snotty rich kid", etc. I am in no way shape or form a rich kid! I don't consider myself snotty either and neither do my friends outside of school. I just think I am truly lucky and blessed to start school with nice things. Should I leave the nice stuff at the house now that we already spent money on it or just take it to school and be lucky I have such things? I hate everyone already hates me! This is not what I was expecting! What should I do? 3/4 of me says just ignore them, but the 1/4 of me says are my instructors going to hate me because I have nice things?

Absolutely bring your Littman and Welch allyn to school! Your instructors will probably admire that you made an investment in your future by buying great supplies. Second, your immature fellow students will probably save up and buy the same supplies once they realize they can't hear anything with those cheap Walmart supplies! LOL I too have a Littman (monogrammed too) and will wear it proudly to school. Ignore those who are jealous. This isn't high school, but unfortunately some still act like it, but you will find others who are not like that. Just keep looking for those people and be friends with them. Good luck and carry your supplies proudly!

Just ignore them and don't deny yourself the use of good equipment just to make someone else feel better. Their stuff may be fine, or they may have to double back and buy again if they aren't getting good results. Not your problem. If they could they would buy expensive things too.

I know it hurts to have people be ugly to you, but just be nice and people will come around. Or they won't, and that's fine. You're there to learn, not make friends. Just be the bigger person. And no, I don't think your professors will hate you.

Good luck and chin up!

Thanks so much for the comment and advice!! These students do seem really immature to me, last I checked we were in college apparently they missed that memo! I hope my professors are impressed (not that I am trying to impress anyone!) I can not wait to get started and using my supplies!! Thanks for the good luck wishes! I will have to hunt out the mature students :)

Ignore them. I usually avoid contact with such people and when unavoidable be polite and give them common courtesy, but nothing else. A BP cuff and a stethoscope are pretty standard stuff and do not a spoiled millionaire make. Besides you got those supplies to use them and they are wonderful tools so bring them to class. Your classmates are just jealous and will most likely have a harder time hearing with the cheaper stethoscope (they do make a diff). Make sure you tag your supplies though if you bring it to clinicals etc as equipment has had a tendency to walk in the past if left behind, put down, or forgotten.

Thanks! and you are very right I am there to learn and better myself to become a wonderful nurse. I am going to try my best to be the bigger person as I want to be professional and not immature. these posts are making me feel much better about all of this! I can't wait to start! I just hope I pass!!

I will for sure put name tags on all items! I plan on being polite as I don't want my professors to think I am rude and not professional. I will most likely not make them friends though. I hope that these supplies make a difference in the way I hear things and such after all that is why I bought them :)

Wow what idiots. I cannot believe how rude they are to you. Bring your stuff and use it proudly. And you do NOT want to be friends with those kinds of people. You will find someone else who is a good person and who is worthy of your time and friendship. Do not give in to the trolls. Who cares if they like you or not, you will be a better nurse. Their attitudes suck. Good luck!

Are you in class with a bunch of 12 year olds? It's not like too came to class with a diamond crusted diaphragm - it's just a nice quality stethoscope and bp cuff, and it in no way affects the functionality of their stuff. And there are some inexpensive brands that worked just fine for me, so it's like there stuff is guaranteed junk, anyway.

Bring your stuff to school, just keep a very close eye on it all. If they are jealous, they might try to steal it out of spite. People in general should have a respectful and polite attitude, not to mention future nurses! The instructors will not care what supplies you have. I have the Cardiology III as well, and the sound quality is absolutely amazing! :) Remember, what goes around definitely does come around. They may hate you now, but one day they'll be in a similar position and the same will happen to them...and they will feel guilty. I'm sure there is at least 1 person who doesn't think like a jealous 5 year old in your class. Find that person and you simply won't need to bother with anyone else! :) I hope they turn their snotty attitudes around and get to know you for YOU!

1. Ignore the critics. Only worry about you because you'll be busy enough dealing with your own stuff.

2. Be sure to label/monogram your supplies so they won't be stolen, lost or otherwise "walk away." I'm going to give your classmates the benefit of the doubt here and not accuse them of anything...but honestly, in a big school or busy hospital, you never know who is around.

Also, if you have commonly colored equipment (black, navy) it is possible that someone could mistake it for theirs, and if there's no ID on it, how can you prove it's yours? So a monogram or other identification/decoration is a good idea.

Yet another reason I'm glad our school provided us with ALL of our needed equipment. (And all quality items too).

Ignore them! You have the right to have good stuff without worrying what others think.
