We are seeing a few threads on working and studying in the UK for a BSc (Hons) in Health and Social Care at the Anglia Ruskin University or something similar.
Going this route will not enable you to stay in the UK once you have finished. There are no shortage of carers in the UK and even if you are lucky to get a student visa to the UK you will not find a employer willing to assist you to work as a RN as most if not all NHS trusts state they will not assist in work permit unless the job is on the shortage occupation list. Current guidelines for working in the UK is under review and expected to change in November 2008 to a point system and you must pass an English exam although exceptions if you are from a majority English speaking country. Plus EU requirements are employ own citizen first then EU before anywhere else in the world. If you are caught working illegally in the UK there are consequences for you and also fines for the employer. Student visa requires that you can prove you can support yourself and any dependants that come with your and not rely on the state and not work. Please be aware there are scams around and if any doubt what so ever please contact the British embassy in your country and ask them.
This warns on scams in the UK but also for nurses in Norway http://globalnation.inquirer.net/news/breakingnews/view_article.php?article_id=59397
I have spoken to several family members and friends this last week and amazed on how much has changed in the 8 months since I left the UK. Businesses that had been around for many decades are closing, Banks/building societies are struggling or being bought out by other companies. I really do feel that things are really tough in the UK at the moment and expecting to find work even as a carer is going to be hard. I understand things are hard in the Philippines but many countries are having economic problems and jobs are suffering, people are looking at other ways to get skills to work and this means employing foreign workers will also suffer
Hi! What is this ONP--heard something about this too. Supposed to be, one will go to UK, initially on a student visa, take the ONP (adaptation course) for 3-6 months (depends on the performance of the nurse) and then, the visa is changed to a working visa. It also requires one to register to the NMC prior to leaving for UK.
TIER 2 SKILLED GENERAL (WORK PERMIT). Source Border and Immigration websiteHow points are awarded for initial applications
A total of 70 points across the different criteria before assigning your certificate of sponsorship.
The 70 points must include 10 points for maintenance and 10 points for English language skills.
If the migrant has a degree taught in English 10 points
Serene, you are quoting this information from the border and immigration website, what you are failing to appreciate and what myself and others keep telling you is that unless you have significant experience as a qualified nurse you are not going to fit into the criteria for shortage occupation. If you don't fit this criteria then no employer is going to sponsor your Visa application.
You really need to experience the financial climate, job situation and poor economy to understand it, you are clearly demonstrating that you do not understand the situation in the UK.

ONP is a program that foreign trained nurses outside the EU has to do before they will be licensed and is part of the NMC overseas program. There is no way you can change your visa and stay and work once completed. To get a work visa you have to find a employer and meet requirements which as we have mentioned already in this thread unless you have experience i the shortage occupation list will be hard to do
Unless one has significant experience in the paid role of the RN, it is going to be impossible to be considered over a Level 5 there, and without that, no way to get a visa to remain and work there.
There is absolutely no reason to go for an additional certification like this one being offered that is not going to do you any good in the UK or in any other country. Things are tight all over, and the UK has had a hiring freeze in place for sometime.
Watching these schools and recruiters make promises that they most certainly cannot make or keep since they have absolutely nothing to do with issuing visas.
We sound like a broken record here, it is your choice as to what you want to do, but know that we have given you the correct information. As well as the fact that you will not be going to the UK and working in the role of the nurse but as a care-giver, so you will not have any current work experience as an RN when you are done as well.
Bad, bad program. Nothing more than to take money from you and put in the pockets of the recruiters that are more interested in selling you and the pockets of the school owners.
if this is really true... does anyone here... or do you know anyone who was able to be converted into an RN status and was absorbed/hire by an employer w/ working visa sponsorship? any testimonies?
It isn't true, employers have to prove that they can not hire from the UK/EU and only exception is if the job meets the criteria in the shortage occupation list which is critical care and band 7 upwards which is specialist/senior nurse
Hi to all pinoy nurses who wanted to take the uk student program.
As registered nurse also in the Philippines and a resident here in Uk.
what i can give u as an unsolicited advise for your own sake and for
the good of all those who wanted to gamble on their hard earned money
just for the sake of coming over here....PLEASE.....listen to suzzane4,
she is telling you correctly about this topic...and I knew it very well
because i am here right now in central london...my wife is also working
here as a nurse at nhs...and what i only need to do for my registration
is to get an ielts score of 7.
I have a lot of friend nurses and doctors who took the risk of coming here
under this student visa scheme,,,but sad to say that the truth is they themselves are feeling bothered everyday about the outcome of their
visa status after the program ends.
I lived here in UK for almost 3 years,my wife is a UK citizen,,but still i find
it hard to land even in an assistant health carer job....
If you are a registered nurse in the Philippines, you better take the risk of going
to any other country in this world except in UK...job is hard to find here even to
its own residents and nationals ,,,and that is the reality here....hope you will
listen to this humble opinion...god bless to all!!
I am so thankful with all of you here. thanks a lot. I just realized I really don't fit in this student and work program. I just passed the local board here in the philippines and been trying to apply for this program. My Mom is working there in the UK but not as a nurse, she said this program will do no good to my future.
Unless hiring changes happen in the UK a Philippine nurse will only be able to work as a caregiver in the UK. Good news is that caregivers make good money in the UK!
I talked to a British expat here in the Philippines who has a staffing firm and handles nurse program graduates who want to become caregivers. This is actually an EXCELLENT route for nursing program graduates who did NOT pass the local board or Local Board passers who fail NCLEX and are closed off to the USA route.
Keep your options open and be flexible. If you want to become a USRN then don't give up, but if you fail NCLEX then maybe you should look at other options since statistically speaking you only have a 25% chance of passing NCLEX the second time as a foreign nurse.
Australia and New Zealand are also good options and don't discount the possibilities in Saudi Arabia and Dubai. Options are available for Philippine nurses as long as you LOOK for them!
Best of luck to all my beloved Pinoy nurses.

By my calculations then
Some one with experience with the job on the shortage occupation list or band 7/8 50 points
BSN 10 points
earnings 15 points (may get 20 depending on employer and grade)
Maintenance 10 points
English skills 10 points
total equal to 95 (100) points
New grade with no experience
BSN 10 points
Maintenance 10 points
Earnings 15 points
English skills 10 points
Total 45 points
The likelihood on meeting the resident labour market test in the current UK situation would be very hard as many businesses are closing with workers having to look elsewhere plus the British government is trying hard to get it's own citizens back to work
