I have a question. I work FT in the ICU, however there is a PRN PACU position that opened up at my current employer. The PRN job requires 4 shifts per month and pays double what my hourly rate is in the ICU since it is PRN. I am interested in picking up the PRN position in addition to my FT ICU job. Do you think my hospital would be ok with me working both?
Please let me know if you have had a similar situation arise and how it worked out.
Thanks in advance!

I'm puzzled as to why you would ask the internet this question when the only one who can give you a specific answer is your employer. You need to ask, they may go for it since you're already oriented and trained to the hospital.
Maybe be she just wanted to see if anyone did this before she approached her hospital. People ask the Internet all kinds of things these days:)
Believe the the labor laws in your state would play a big role. It wouldn't be allowed where I work, however you could cross train to work in PACU and you'd be paid OT just as you would if all hours were in one department. Your current department might not like it if they incur overtime because you work earlier in a pay period in the PACU.
If you are interested in the other position and want to stay at your current position, that is totally fine. I believe that the hospital would be OK with that. I would check with your HR director though just to make sure. I would weigh the pros and cons about it though just to make sure that you are aware of them going forward. When I was working at the skilled nursing home facility, I started out working on the weekends in the assisted living unit, but I also wanted to work in the adult day care center which was downstairs in the basement of the facility. So, I asked HR about it and the nurse downstairs at the adult day care center had an opening, but it was PRN. So, I worked upstairs on weekends and downstairs PRN. Then, the PRN downstairs became a part-time position and then one day it became a full-time. So, you never know what will transpire from things. I would apply and see what happens. I wish you the best. Marcy CNA
I asked the same question at my hospital where I am full time, since I am PRN at my former employer and it is a tough commute for me. I would rather pick up PRN at my current place of employment. From my understanding I can pick up PRN at another department. I would be overtime, but it will hit that other department's budget. Now, I am not sure if I can actually apply for a guaranteed position vs just picking up. Need to research further as well.
Our healthcare system won't even let us work full time and PRN at two different hospitals that they own. Sometimes I pick up hours on a different unit, but always get paid the same rate (plus applicable overtime). However, this is only when they are very short staffed and have exhausted all PRN options and still need nurses.

I used to work full time in ICU and picked up some shifts in PACU at the same hospital.
