Words of encouragement, please?

Published

OK, so after years and years of thinking and talking about it, I finally have an appointment this afternoon to register for A & P 1. The problem is I've had an appointment every semester for the past couple years but never follow through. I chicken out last minute, this of all the "easier" things I could be doing that won't be so time consuming and maybe easier on my family ( I work full-time and have a two year old). Add to that that my current community college cut their part-time evening program and it's now full-time day only .....

But then I found another cc in the next state over (and no further from my home than my current cc) that has a part time evening/weekend program that seems perfect! So that's no longer an excuse...

I've tried all the "easier" paths and I still don't feel satisfied and always come back to nursing...

So I can take my pre-reqs at my current school (for the cheaper tuition) and transfer. I even talked to my boss yesterday and got clearance to leave early 2 days a week so I can take A & P...

So the only thing standing in my way is myself....

Any words of encouragement, please? I can feel myself getting all nervous.....

The fact that you keep making appts leads me to believe you want to do this. I say go to the appt and I bet (and hope) that the advisor is very enthusiastic and can get you convinced to continue!

JUST DO IT! Don't think, don't overanalyze, don't talk yourself out of it. You've done the 'homework/research' so obviously you want to do it... Take the step and see how you feel afterwards (:

There is no comparing the self respect that grows from doing something you are intimidated by or frightened of. I put off getting my Associate's Degree for about 15 years due to being nervous about college algebra. When I finally bit the bullet and did it I could not believe I put it off that long. Don't delay any further. Show faith in yourself and your abilities. Nothing worth having comes easy, it is true. It is also true though that "hard" doesn't mean "suffering" or "Impossible".

Just do it.

A&P is hard but not impossible!!!! If this is the only class your taking, just jump right in and do it!!! I promise it won't be as hard as you have made it out to be. :)

Thanks guys... only four more hours until my appointment...

I want to take this class, but I'm scared to start on something I'm afraid I won't be able to finish. I worry about the competition, being able to get good enough grades, balancing school/family/work... having to keep my full-time job while in nursing school (my family is on my benefits)... and praying that my employer gives me saturdays off for clinicals down the road (i'm in retail and saturdays are kind of a must)...

So you see, I have an awful lot of hoops to jump through and don't want to start something, get excited about it, only to fall flat on my face....

I'm sure by now you are *hopefully* at your appointment. :yeah:

I just want to give you more encouragement. You can do this and it sounds like you really WANT to do this. Jump in girl and don't look back.

Have you ever struggled with any other class before? I am just trying to figure out what it is that has made you so intimidated by this course? Because if you are going off of what you have heard here on allnurses, you seriously shouldn't let other people's negative opinions get inside your head. A&P 1 is not that big of a deal. I am not joking, you are going to look back and laugh at yourself for this. Sure I was scared ****less of that class before I took it but that was partly due to the fact that it was a 6 week course (4 days a week). And after I got a B on the first test while 15 people failed, I knew it was smooth sailing for the final 5 weeks. And I ended up getting an A in the class.

Now, if you get a horrible teacher, God help you. Because you are going to have to work your butt of like you never have before. A bad teacher can make a huge difference in your learning experience. I had to do a lot of extra studying and researching for A&P I because some of the concepts are so complicated that you have to spend extra time helping yourself understand them. Come here for help and support and do lots of research on the internet and you will be just fine.

The class is as easy as you make it. If you do all your homework, show up to every class (on time) and pay attention in lecture you will be just fine. Study in all your spare time and carry your notecards around with you if necessary. You have to work hard but nothing that great comes easy. Trust me I am a stay at home mom to a 21 month old. If I can do it you can too.

Two and a half more hours to go...

Yes, I'm intimidated by the class, but that's not all. I'm scared to take the class, end up loving it, know that nursing is absolutely what I want to do, and find out that because I have to work that I won't be able to finish. I'm afraid of disappoinment...

Also, I have quite a history of indecisiveness.. My school has an online registration system so you can add and drop classes yourself. I unfortuantely have had a history of changing my mind too many times and changing my schedule which has resulted in an administrative block on my account. So now I have to go face a counselor and the registrar to register for a class. I'm so embarrassed and afraid to show my face!! I know it's irrational but I'm so afraid someone is going to reprimand me... a 31 year old afraid of getting yelled at....

So, ya, it's complicated and I'm really, really, nervous!!! :imbar:imbar

This is your REAL problem.

If you really want to be a nurse (and it sounds like you do) then you need to seek out ways to make that dream come true. You know you have nothing to worry about with A&P so QUIT IT! And start spending some of that energy on saving your money, and applying for scholarships that can make this dream a reality. Many people work full time and go to nursing school at the same time, so why can't you?

And here I thought you were scared of A&P! HAHA

Good luck at your appointment. AND YOU BETTER GO, because if you don't I am gonna kick your butt.

I went to the appointment.... and am officially registered for A & P 1 !!!!!!

Thanks to all who responded... I'm not sure I would have been able to go without your encouraging words....

I've taken the first step towards realizing my dream!!!!

you seem to be finding excuses not to go. I think you really need to find out why you want to do this - is it what you want, or your spouse? or family? Many people go back to school with jobs and children (I did.). You have to find your right reason and motivation.
