Why are so many people today shunning real medicine, vaccines etc for hoaxes and gimmicks like essential oils, weight loss powders, etc? Any ideas why so many are turning away from actual medicine?

I’d like to see some studies where cancer was treated with plant oils

If you think these nurses are tough for calling you out, try being around a surgeon!?

Lol, this is calling out? Lol.

And my daddy is a surgeon. I know how they are ? But hey they’re the rockstars of the hospital so they’ve earned it.

In ancient times garlic was used to prevent infection. Garlic has antibacterial qualities as do other oils. Granted its not as good as Ciprofloxacin or any other modern drug, it was not bad for the times. Some of that ancient medicine is still used today, and if you know how to use it, it might save your life in a survival situation.

I agree. In addition, the overpriced healthcare system is also a major contributing factor.

I did not, at first, realize that this post was started by someone who maybe wants to be a nurse... or maybe a radiology technician... or maybe a doctor except that it takes too long....

I haven’t looked though all of these (I have to get up for work at 6:30, and it’s 6:28!) but the first one, on the prior page— the article about ancient botanicals fighting cancer cells— is from Spandidos publishing. That is not a peer-reviewed journal. That is a paper mill that publishes papers from China with no oversight. (I’m not knocking scientists from China; I am saying that Spandidos is not an actual research journal, it is a vanity press that is owned and published by one guy.)

I’m not a believer in pseudoscience AT ALL but you are just cutting and pasting links that don’t make any sense. If you plan to go into healthcare, please get on top of your research.

I know some chemicals work. Of course listerine kills germs. I’m talking about how idiots think oils cure cancer, or other real diseases. If wintergreen mint makes you breathe better or something I get it. I’m talking about the hocus pokus stuff.

With the attitude of calling people "idiots" because they don't agree with your view of western medicine, you really should rethink going into a "people helping" profession. Your attitude will show through eventually, and patients don't want to be talked to or treated like that. Do you?

And yes, I'm well educated, 2 Masters degrees and currently finishing a PhD in my other area of interest. I have 20+ years in nursing, and served in the military prior to that, so I'm well rounded and what I don't know, I have a large bank of resources that I can call upon. As @hppygr8ful noted, you don't know what you don't know. No one is insulting you, but many of us have years of experience and knowledge to help make informed decisions. And while we know that snake oil solutions don't work, we also know that belittling a patient doesn't either. Finding where their belief lies, then providing education for any deficit is what we are there to do.

Some medications, in light of recent findings (ie-metformin) shows that our highly revered chemical solutions aren't always right either.

Have a blessed day

I will concede your point on that as I did not read every article - I think you are confusing me with the OP as I have been in nursing for a very long time. My point by that post is that the op cited one article from a commercial cosmetics company as proof of his/her claim without even looking to google scholar or other more reputable databases.

No I don’t want to be a rad tech. I want to be a surgeon like my daddy but he tells me the best way to go these days is NP. He says anyone going into medicine these days is crazy and that PA/NP is the best choice. I’m just still feeling it all out.
