Will marijuana ever be okay in nursing?

Okay I realize my username isn't the best for this topic... anyways :woot:

Let's talk about marijuana. The fact that it's illegal is mindblowing. Let's ban a plant but not life crippling narcotics. We all know that marijuana is safer than alcohol.

Unfortunately with the weed being legal in certain states, I feel like the BON wouldn't care about those laws. Plus being illegal on a federal level (what.) doesn't help either.

So do you guys think weed will ever be okay in nursing? I hope one day it will be. To be honest, with all the stress (mentally and physically) we go through, a joint might be extremely beneficial. What do you guys think?

Since smoking cigarettes is frowned upon in the medical arena (there is another thread on AN supporting my observation) I doubt if smoking joints or blunts will be acceptable.

There are many more options than "smoking" that are found to be very beneficial.

I wonder what will happen when GW Pharmaceuticals Epidiolex hits the market 6-8 weeks out. It is 98% CBD, 1% thc and !% other fillers including flavorings. It is for seizures and migraine headaches. The DEA rescheduled the thc from schedule 1 to schedule 5 on 9/29/18 for this one pharmaceutical company.

That said, I would imagine that someone on this medicine would test positive on a random drug test. Thoughts? I do not, nor will take the medicine but I know some will need it. I might also add that the investor website says the price will be 32k per year for a 12 month prescription.

I don't know if something that's 98% CBD would even test positive for THC because if such a low level of THC. Anyone out there know?

Sure of course, but there is honestly nothing wrong with marijuana. Imagine if there was a stigma for nurses to come home to a glass or two of wine (which we all know alcohol opens a chance for addiction, which weed does not)

Give that no risk for addiction spiel to my husband who has smoked since he was 12. He's 41 and has tried repeatedly to quit. But PHYSICAL symptoms along with the psychological ones make him keep going back.

There is great harm. I'm not going even compare alcohol because just because alcohol can have devastating effects, doesn't mean weed is healthy. My marriage has suffered tremendously bc of his chronic use. I have ZERO clue if/when his behavior is due to marijuana. He smokes it that much that he just seems "normal." Emotional neglect has killed us. I have to work my ass off to not file bankruptcy bc his ambition is zero. He works FT but it HAS to be at a place that doesn't drug test, and his pay is practically minimum wage. And he is so unbelievably intelligent. Waste of intelligence, waste of a good heart....bc a damn drug has it's claws in him so badly.

Having had personal experience with benzos, I am extremely against them. But I wish to God my husband would get a temporary as needed script for a very small dosage while he tries to quit under psychiatric supervision and counseling. This is a man who won't even take cough medicine, he's so against medications.

Don't get me started on judgement. The poor decisions he has made bc of the poor judgement from weed has cost us dearly. Harmless my ass. We can't try for fertility tx bc he can't get his **** together from the grips of weed. I'm 37 now, and always FELT I was a mother in my bones. But no...tick tock, times running out. Weed has destroyed us.

And you don't know WHO will use it very very occasionally (which can still cause relationship issues) and who will use it chronically.

Epidiolex contains only CBD, it does not contain even trace amounts of THC, you're thinking of Sativex.

I don't think making drugs illegal makes any sense at all personally. Clearly the war on drugs has been a colossal failure. Some President Nixon declaired the war the amount of drugs has increased rapidly along with our prison populations. Having said that so long as weed is illegal on a federal level then nurses are going to be punished for using it. No medical facility can exist without some form of federal funding in the form of Medicare and other sources. Those dollars are contingent on following federal laws unfortunately to include making sure your staff aren't using illegal substances. Until weed is legal on a federal level you will risk your license if you use it. I think that's a shame but i also think that's the way it is

A friend of mine broke up with a fiance after she became convinced that he was addicted to pot, with all the accompanying issues described above. She also scoffs at the assertion that it's impossible to be addicted to weed.

Well, weed may not cause physical addiction but working in psych I have seen hundreds of people mentally dependent on it. This is not to say that some people can't use it responsibly but it has in my experience contributed to the problems experienced by many of my patients.

As a chronic pain sufferer it has been suggested that I try marijuana but so far I have not. I was in a monitoring program and as long as a positive test will endanger my license I won't go there. I am never allowing those people into my life again.
