Is it ok to retake prereq courses if I didn't make an A or B the first time as a college undergrad? Will the school look at the old grade and the most recent one when they evaluate all my transcripts, or do they take the highest grade from that course? How does this all work?

I think it's best that you Talk with your school advisor. Not all schools are the same. With Some schools you CAN retake courses for a higher grades and some you can't. If they do allow for multiple attempts, you'll want to check with the program you'll be attending to see if they allow for multiple attempts as well. Good luck! :)

It depends on the program. One local program here averages the two grades. Another program (the one I'm starting in January) only looks at the highest grade you received. Also consider your test scores too. I had to retake a&p1 because I had a lot of personal issues at the time, and I still only got a C the second time because of more personal issues. But I received an 83% on the TEAS V. One of the best schools in my area just invited me to their BSN. So, if you feel more comfortable retaking a course, go for it. But its not always necessary.

This depends upon the policies of the individual programs. If their policies are not stated, then it would be a good idea to speak to someone involved with the admissions process to find out what policies are followed in each program that you are interested in. What goes in one program, may not go for another. For that matter, it could change from one cycle to another. Best to ask at each nursing program.

My school only looks at your FIRST attempt for each class.

Many of the schools in my area (California) only look at the first score as well. AND on top of that they only look at your first TEAS score too. This has me scared to death becuase if you fail it you are basically screwed from EVER getting into their nursing program....FOR LIFE!!! I think this is so stupid...Hell I can't think of any professional test (doctor, lawyer etc) that only lets you take a test once...I could understand making you wait a awhile but banning someone for LIFE...that INSANE. This has me scared $H1TTLE$$ to take this test.

As everyone else said you definitely need to talk to the schools you are going to apply to. Some will take the higher grade only, some will evaluate both, and some will average the 2.

It will definitely depend on your school. At my school, they will only look at the most recent grade and will only count that one.

Like everyone else said, it depends on the school. I had to retake micro after receiving a D.. The second time around I received a B. I was accepted to one school but some of the other schools denied me. I doubt it was solely based on my retake course but you never know! Just make sure you raise your letter grade significantly the second time around : )))
Good luck!

Yea. They'll be harmed... but don't let that stop you from fighting the good fight. We (allnurses) believe in you. Go get em, Tiger!
Thanks for the comments everyone! I found out that UTHSCSA allows students to retake courses, but they average all of your attemps together. So if I retake stats and get an 'A' to compensate for my first attempt which was a 'C', my average would be a 'B'. :| This could be a problem for me if I want to have a competing chance. But hey, I hope they see that I am going back to school to make an effort to fix my gpa, and that I am capable of succeeding.

My program allows 2 attempts and takes the better of the 2, which is good but sucks if neither of the attempts goes well. I'm sorry they average them but that B is still better than the C! Good luck!
