  1. Thanks for the comments everyone! I found out that UTHSCSA allows students to retake courses, but they average all of your attemps together. So if I retake stats and get an 'A' to compensate for my first attempt which was a 'C', my average would be a 'B'. :| This could be a problem for me if I want to have a competing chance. But hey, I hope they see that I am going back to school to make an effort to fix my gpa, and that I am capable of succeeding.
  2. Has anyone overcame a not-so-stellar gpa from college and retook classes to improve their gpa? I am so worried that I won't be able to get into my dream bsn program because the school's policy on retaking classes. I really want to go to the nursing school in my hometown, UTHSCSA, but I feel like it's out of my reach. I've been out of college for years and now want to make a change that I wanted for quite some time and become an RN. UTHSCSA allows pre-nursing students to retake prereq courses, but they average all your past attempts. So if I received a 'C' in stats in college and got an 'A' the second time around my average would be marked down as a 'B'. And I know that the classes I retake would hardly be competitive enough for me to get in. I'm hoping to hear from other students who have been in a similar situation and how they overcame this. I know I'm being a (major) cry baby, but I feel discouraged and I'm thinking maybe I should rethink this.. Any words of wisdom or encouragement will be appreciated!
  3. Is it ok to retake prereq courses if I didn't make an A or B the first time as a college undergrad? Will the school look at the old grade and the most recent one when they evaluate all my transcripts, or do they take the highest grade from that course? How does this all work?
  4. I'm interested in several different nursing specialties, i.e. peds, ICU, ER, CC and oncology. Does it matter if I take the ADN or BSN route for these? Correct me if I'm wrong, but if I take the ADN route will it limit me to particular specialties? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I consider myself a pre-nursing student. I will be a college graduate soon and I want to pursue a career in nursing instead. I played around in school my first two years and more than likely my gpa will be a 2.8 when I leave. I plan on taking science and math prereqs at a community college next spring. I want to go to school in San Antonio so I can live with my parents and save money. I know UTHSCSA is competitive. I think even if my science/math gpa was above a 3.5 I wouldn't have a good chance since my cumulative from college is holding me back. So now I am looking at ADN programs in San Antonio. I've read some posts and I'm nervous hospitals won't hire me if I take the ADN route (for magnet status), even though ADN and BSN both become RNs in the end. Any comments and suggestions will be extremely helpful to me in my decision for the future.
  5. A nurse instructor said: There is no magic GPA but in general most students have a GPA of 3.5 and above. You must have a 3.0 to be competitive. Is she talking about cumulative gpa or science and math gpa? I'm going to be taking my science and math prereq coures next spring at a community college and going to try my hardest to get A's. I messed around in college and my gpa is a 2.8.
  6. Thank you all for the suggestions! They are very helpful to me. @brenay good luck to you!!
  7. I'm a recent college graduate and will be taking prereq courses next spring towards a bsn. I visited the admissions site and they have a list of science (2 anatomy and physiology with labs, microbiology with lab, chem 1 and 2, nutrition) and math (algebra, stats) courses to take prior to applying. My question is, does anyone have a recommendation of a particular order to take these classes. I'm wanting to take 12-15 hours per semester. I would like all these classes done in three semesters (spring, summer, fall) if not, four. Is it ok to take a&p in the same semester as chem1 or microbiology w/ lab? Should I take one class with a lab per semester? Thoughts and opinions are greatly appreciated!
  8. I'm going to be a college graduate in December. I'm interested in pursuing a degreee towards nursing. Ultimately I want to be an RN. I am worried though. I've read some posts that the San Antonio market is saturated and Texas as well. Some nurses and students have mentioned hospitals are now requiring magnet status (I have no idea what that means). Should I consider getting a BSN if I want to stay in San Antonio?
  9. This is very helpful advice, and it has given me a lot to think about. Thank you all for your suggestions!
  10. So if I enroll is an ADN program, can I still become or given the opportunity to be an RN? Is there a difference between ADN/RN and BSN/RN?
  11. Hi all! I've been thinking seriously about applying to nursing school for about a year and I desperately need your advice. I'm currently a senior at a university and will be graduating in December with a degree in journalism. As a journalism student I only took the required math and sciences classes, so I know I would have to complete some prereq classes. And I'm not worried about tackling the classes, but I do have one issue. The thing is, I will be graduating with a low gpa, 2.7 to be exact. I didn't worry about my gpa in my first and second year and now I'm paying for it. My first idea was to enroll at a community college next spring and ace the prereqs, and I now wonder if this will be enough for me to get in an accelerated bsn program. I probably have almost 30 hours of prereqs to complete. My second idea was to take the traditional bsn route. But I feel like it would take more time and money. My question is, where do I go from here? What do you think I should do? My last question is what do you think I should do additionally in the meantime to make me a desirable candidate as a nursing candidate? Any of your advice or suggestions will be extremely helpful to me! Thank you.
