Why do We eat our young?

Nurses Relations

Published

Why do you think we eat our young or even our own? Why do you think there is bullying in nursing? Why do you think we almost act like we are out to get other nurses?

Because it is easy to make someone already insecure about lack of experience even more so. Hazing exists everywhere no matter how it is outlawed.

Making jokes/using sarcasm/snide remarks aren't bullying. The fact that someone would label behavior as such is a big part of the problem.

I always find it highly ironic when someone comes on a thread, where people are commenting in a way they don't like, and scolds everybody that they should ignore a thread that they think ridiculous.

Meanwhile, that person could've ignored the comments that they disagreed with. It's like people protesting a political ideology that they consider hateful, and they behave very hateful themselves, sometimes even rioting and destroying property.

I have, actually. Not on this site, but on a weight loss site. I didn't consider it bullying because the jokes were lighthearted and not cruel. They weren't meant to hurt me, but to be silly while pointing out that the question I asked, without enough information, was rather silly.

I've been actually bullied before - it's terrible. I was constantly harassed, made fun of, and stalked on multiple different websites by the same group of people. I got death threats, and was told that my rape story couldn't have been real because I was too ugly to be raped. People told me repeatedly to kill myself, or offered to do it for me. For months.

So maybe it's because I have that experience that I can confidently say that I don't believe that making a joke like "I like to eat young nurses because they are crunchy" is in the same ballpark as "kill yourself".

Difference is sweetheart, my original comment actually contributes toward and reflects on the original question. People responding about how new nurses taste etc exemplified what the OP brought up and contribute no substance toward the discussion. But using your logic, you too are the pot calling the kettle black. Hey don't get me wrong if my comments strike a nerve with anybody and you want to keep making jokes it is a free country. Don't get mad. Peace.

When people include a sweetheart or honey in their retort, it is so designed to be condescending.

Peace and Namaste ;)

Looks like the OP joined in 2005? Plenty of time to acknowledge the many, many, many NETY/bullying threads on AN.

On this end of the thread, it simply looks like the OP posted to get a rise. PP's responded in kind.

... similar to your "sweetheart" jab.

What a nasty and condescending post. "Sweetheart"?
What a nasty and condescending post. "Sweetheart"?

Yes, exactly, and how ironic, coming from someone who posted to criticize others here for being nasty and condescending toward the OP ...

Personally, the only nurse bully I've encountered was actually a relatively new nurse. She'd been a nurse for less than 5 years and had been a charge nurse for less than a year. Rather than helping me when I was having trouble, she would either take over or make sarcastic comments.

I think there are just a lot of seriously unhappy people in this world. Unfortunately, we might work with some of them.

Having worked with a few of these folks, I know it is awfully unpleasant. For years now I have thought about Linda,

Marilyn, Susan, Barbara, Wanda, Sue, and the others who don't come to memory at this moment. Their rudeness, their

bitterness, their personal unhappiness that they brought to work with them every day really did a number on me - for

years and years. The memory of them always makes me dislike them all over again, makes me recall how uncomfortable

it was to work with these people, how I could never really relax around them or trust them. No doubt they had reasons

to be miserable, but they should have learned how to leave their troubles at home. I did. Most of us do.

From now on, I plan to think about Rachel, Mary, Loretta, Pat, Diana, Betty, Delores, Wade, Joe, Jan, Marie, Claudia, Janet,

and the majority of nurses I've worked with these past many years. These were kindly, pleasant, helpful, patient. I need to

let go of the ugliness the others brought to work.

I hope that all who are disturbed by coworkers will think about the other folks you work with - the ones who are patient and

helpful, who you might know have troubles but who leave them at the door, do their jobs, get along with others, and who are

generally a joy to be with.

I plan to pray more for unhappy people, too. (Like me because I didn't win the $758,000,000)!!!!
