Why do you want to be a nurse?

I'm just curious to see the responses to this, and maybe there's a thread like this which I missed, but why do YOU want to be a nurse?

If you're fresh from HS, why did you choose nursing over other career options?

If you're returning to school, why are you going back for a career change and why nursing?

Yes there have been several threads with this topic before, but the are always interesting to hear new people's views.

I am an older returning student, I never finished my degree always wanted too but always had other things get in the way (life).

Now I am more dedicated and motived thanks to "life" experiences. I wanted something rewarding and flexible, I have always liked "helping" people and I have always liked being in the center or action. My mom was a nurse and hated it so when I was younger it never even crossed my mind to look into it. As an adult I worked in a hospital as a unit clerk for ICU LOVED it the only problem was I wanted more patient contact I wanted more action and I wanted to help more, so voila I thought I should become a nurse so thats what I have been working on for the past 4 years slowly but surely I am getting there.

I am 22 and I decided that I would wait to go to school when I knew EXACTLY what I wanted to do. I have met so many people that have gotten bachelors degrees and are unhappy with their profession, and end up having to go back to school. I love the fast pace of emergency departments. I can't sit at a desk all day. Also, I think that doctors are more into the "diagnosis" not the person. I want to be that person that can help in the moment of crisis, because I have been there and it is nice to have someone there that cares, I just don't do good with smells.... ha ha :barf01:

I have worked in the OR for almost 5 years and I want to GET OUT!!!! :) I just want to be able to know I have the flexibility to get a job regardless of where I am. As it is, I can ONLY work in the OR and I have a 5 year contract with the Hospital (part of a home buying program) So I figured I might as well since I am not going anywhere!

Oh, that and I want to work with people more indepth of course! ..lol

I want a job where i am always learning, a job in the medical field, a job that is flexible, and a job that can provide me some sort of financial stability. Nursing. this is it. (for now :)

I graduated high school in 2005 with the intentions of being a kindergarten teacher. I took child development during school and had my 90 clock hour by the time I graduated. I decided to take a year off of school and I got a job working with children, which changed my mind. I decided I wanted to work with younger children, and I can't survive off daycare wages. I had always thought about doing nursing, but teaching was my first passion. After working with the children at the age I thought I wanted to teach, I realized it wasn't for me. Then I went back to my second choice, nursing

I started my prereq's fall 06 and I will be done them ( I hope) by the end of the summer. The school I go to takes fall and spring admissions for Nursing, so hopefully I should be started Nursing in Jan 2008.

This fall, I'll take some time off school to work full time and save money!

Call it midlife crisis!!!! I need to be pushed to my outer limits. ;) So far this journey has been the greatest challenge of my life....and I had plenty others including a near death experience. I can't explain it but it's just something I need to do

I'm a bartender with a previous degree. I majored in something that's fairly unemployable, and tended bar through school. I graduated in 2001, and never wanted to take the serious pay cut that an entry-level job usually is. However, I knew several bartender-turned-nurses, and they all loved what they did. I got intrigued, learned more about the profession, and now I start NS May 14! And now it seems that every bartender I talk to wants to go into some area of health care....

Well me I would like to be a nurse because basically I was brainwashed to it, my best friend since we started college together was brainwashed by her dad and later she passed the influence her dad on her onto me, when I first started college i wanted to do something that involves Humanities, like history, geography etc...but my friend was always bugging me to go into that field so I started to take all prerequisite, but there are other reason behind too, for once I find nursing incredibly interesting, I think Pathology and Pharmocology would be my fav subjects, i dont care too much about Chem and Math, when I think about other medical professions they just dont sound interesting to me like nursing does, plus is very rewarding to help someone to get better or make someone feel better by talking to them in the moments of their agony, i know they would be happy to know that someone is there with them and cares! But Im also very scared of my chosen proffesion and every other day Im trying to run away from it and change my path when i think I might hurt someone by mistake, to be nurse is to be brave...

I love people, and I hate people but I learn so much from both. I think there is a certain intelligence that nurses have that can't be measured. I am fulfilled by helping others. Giving, when I don't want to give makes me a happy girl!

I want to be a nurse for a few reasons: It has been a dream of mine since I was 9 years old, specifically being Pediatric Nurse. I LOVE kids and have since a very young age from when I was taking care of my dolls like they were real babies and then when I got old enough I stated babysitting and have been doing that for about 11 years now and I am a nanny. I have always had that nursing gene in my body and the want to take care of people and work at a hospital. I just know it is my destiny to be a R.N. I had a few changes along the way but now I am 110% sure and dedicated to becoming an R.N. I took a 18 month break from school to figure out what I really want and I realized nursing is the career for me!! So I have 3 pre reqs left and hopefully will start nursing school next fall!!!

Well, I'm fresh outta H.S literally(less than 1 yr), I chose nursing because I like people, and I enjoy anything that has to do with science and health specifically. I love being in the hospital setting, with all the activity!
